Have been uploading photos for many years, always providing a place location. Upon reviewing my photo contributions, I noticed that an entire group taken at San Diego’s Big Bay Waterfront have been recaptioned to “unknown place.” Plus*, two separate groups of my photos (three photos in one group and a single photo in the other) have been recaptioned from San Diego Embarcadero to Ember Garage Door Repair. How do I get the proper locations* reattached to my photos that I uploaded to Google Maps?
Hi @HappilyHavingFun , I am sorry about your experience.
BTW, it is not actually possible for the photos in Google Maps to be moved from a location to another.
The reason can be different:
- Unknown place: it means that the location where the photos were connected to is no longer in Google Maps.
- The photos are connected to a different place: the place has been renamed /edited
In this specific case the Imbarcadero has been claimed and renamed by a business.

Hi @HappilyHavingFun ,
In addition to what @ErmesT mentioned as possible reasons for your issue, I wanted to let you know that I have escalated this to our responsible team to investigate.
Please note that I’m changing the topic of your post to How-tos, as this is where Local Guides ask questions and report issues. Thank you!
@ErmesT Thank you for the tag!
Thank you very much. I appreciate the time you took to help me.
Thank you very much for elevating my question. As to the garage, many, many other photos taken by others and submitted to Google Maps also show when you click on the business’s site. As to the above and also the “unknown place” photos that are showing on my contribution list, I appreciate the referral very much.
