Around five months back, I raised a query what happened to an excellent feature of seeing an elevation graph, when one selects walking as the mode of navigation in the Maps app on Android.
There was no satisfactory explanation. Someone said the facility is inactive in India. However, I had an old screenshot displaying the view for a track right here.
Although, I could see that on a desktop, somehow, the speciality vanished from my phone.
Surprisingly, I rediscovered that feature once again while answering a query, yesterday.
A user had difficulty to include the George Washington Bridge at NY in a walking path. While investigating that, I wanted to see whether the route shows that name, & wow, the elevation graph surfaced at the bottom.
Nevertheless, there is a change in the manner in which the diagram emerges in the UI.
Earlier, that was visible along with the full preview. At present that becomes active only when we select a point on the path.
Still, not bad. That would help in knowing how many ups & downs are there within the track.
And not only that, the graph is now interactive. Touch any spot on that & then it will show where to expect a steep climb or downhill direction.
Maybe, that was an existing feature. However, I didn’t notice that earlier.
I tried on my Android phone using the latest public beta version of Maps from July 23, 2020, but I was unable to see the elevation graph. I wanted to test if the graph was also available when navigating by bicycle But neither Walking nor Bicycle navigation lets me see the graph. I’m touching the line, I’m opening the Preview and Steps and more and looking at turns, but there is no elevation graph to be seen anywhere. And my screen is relatively tall, so I don’t think the adaptation to screen size can be the problem.
Do you have any tips? Or maybe it regional differences in Google Maps functionality.
Frankly, I have no clues on that @MortenCopenhagen
There was no solution on my earlier query also.
Nevertheless, I can see that both on Android P & Q.
The graph should open up in the preview mode.
I checked that a walking path in Stuttgart & yes I can see a graph there also.
Surprisingly, the app did not display any graph for a path in Copenhagen. Maybe, that’s not yet available in your region. Can you try to see whether a track somewhere else in Europe or the US shows that?
I can confirm that the elevation graph shows right up when navigating by foot in Stuttgard, Germany, when using my phone. And it is also visible when navigating by bicycle.
So clearly it is not dependent on the app version, but geographic area. Maybe Google considers Denmark to be so flat that information on elevation is unnessasary. Denmark is very flat, but still…
