Kitakyushu City is an area where industry has flourished.
In the 1960s, pollution occurred, and the river water became so dirty that conditions were reportedly dire.
That polluted water flowed into the ocean, creating an environment where no fish or microorganisms could survive—not even E. coli—and where ship propellers would corrode and melt away.
Starting in the late 1970s, the city enacted ordinances stricter than national standards, and by the late 1990s, the environment had been restored to a state where fish could live again.
Today, the city shares this technology and expertise with other countries.
Although this museum is small, there’s plenty to see.
You can observe creatures from the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river in aquariums.
You can also compare past water quality with current water quality.
The black-and-white photo on the left was taken about 40 to 50 years ago. The color photo on the right is from today.
The water inside the bottle is from the early 1970s. The glass-enclosed section in the back shows the current water quality.
The most notable feature is the “Environmental Window.”
It allows you to observe the river from the side.
It’s really fun to actually see the fish swimming!

川の美化の取り組みの紹介です。
北九州市にある博物館で学べます。
水環境館

北九州市は工業が発展したところです。
1960年代は公害が発生し、川の水も汚れ、ひどい状態だったそうです。
その汚水が海に流れ込み、 魚や微生物が一切棲めなくなり、大腸菌すら生きられない環境、船のスクリューが腐食して溶けるほどの状態だったそうです。
1970年代の後半から国より厳しい条例を定め、1990年代後半には魚が住める環境に戻りました。
今はこの技術やノウハウを海外に提供しています。
この博物館は小さいですが、いろいろなものを見ることが出来ます。
上流域、中流域、下流域の生き物を水槽に入れて、観察することが出来ます。
また過去の水質と現在の水質を見比べることも出来ます。
最も注目されているのが環境窓。
川を横から観察できるようになっています。
実際に魚が泳ぐ姿を見ることが出来て楽しいですよ！
