Eating on a Banana Leaf

Polyphenols are micronutrients obtained from certain plant-based foods and are packed with antioxidants that have health benefits like improved digestion, cure from diabetes, preventing neurodegenerative disease, and relief from cardiovascular diseases.

The above photo is from my home recently when we served and consumed food served on a banana leaf. When you use banana leaves to eat food from, the food absorbs the polyphenols from the leaves, so that you get the benefit of the nutrition.

It is also believed that the banana leaf has anti-bacterial properties that kill all the germs in the food, thereby reducing the chances of you falling sick.

Below is a picture of me consuming food served on a banana leaf.

This is a tradition in India to serve food on a banana leaf but is becoming less common.

In India, some hotels in the states of Tamilnadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra serve food on banana leaves. The above photo is from Vani Hindu Military Hotel in Bengaluru which I visited recently with office colleagues. They provide food in steel utensils which one can self-serve on a banana leaf. Many people say food tastes better when consumed from a banana leaf. I agree.

What are your experiences with eating on a banana leaf like? I’d be interested in knowing.

Till then… Happy Guiding

Thanks for this wonderful post…

Incidentally, this is most popular in Kerala & towards Kanyakumari side of Tamil Nadu, where banana plants are abundant.

However, the following type that’s also available in many hotels…

Thanks @JMD9

I love dosa as well and missing the Bengaluru dosa that I enjoyed living there.

Now in Delhi NCR it is quite rare to find dosa as street food, though we make it at home.
