UPDATE: Starting November 8, 2016, this feature is now rolling out to Level 3+ Local Guides on Android.
Go beyond stars when saving your places — soon you’ll be able to organize your places into special lists such as Favorites and Want to Go, or save custom lists all on your own, like:
We’re rolling out lists to Level 4+ Local Guides on Google Maps for Android over the next week — months before we launch to the public. If you’re a Level 4 Local Guide, give it a try, and don’t forget to shake to give feedback. You’ll need to have the latest version of Google Maps for Android installed.
See how lists work in this video:

This is a very useful feature! I have been ‘saving’ local points of interest to share with family and friends that visit the area. But until now I had no way to separate San Francisco POIs from San Jose POIs, or between my recommendations for others and my own personal favorites.
I opened up Maps and ensured I have the latest version, but this new feature doesn’t seem to be available yet. After step 5 above, no lists appear for selection. Do you know whether this feature will take a little while to roll out?
@KeithA Yes, this started rolling out today so you may not have it until tomorrow. We are excited to learn how you use the feature thought, what you like about it, and what we can improve!
Awesome! That’s exactly what I’ve been asking for The only thing I’m missing now is a notification for when I’m near a place from the “want to go” list. Otherwise an awesome update, thank you!
Now it just needs sharing and collaboration. That way I could make a list with my wife of places to visit on vacations. I know it’s possible with Google Drive to create a shared Map “file” but it doesn’t work good offline.
New feature starts with version 9.36.0 of Android Maps
For Maps versions not supporting this Save lists feature, they can only see the “Starred places” list
Don’t worry, this new feature supports putting a Place into multiple lists.
To make all your saved places accessible across Desktop Maps / iOS Maps and Android Maps, always put your Saved Places into the “Starred places” as well.
I used many of them because I sometimes really could not recall why I added a star to a place but labeling could work the wonders. Now they seem to be segragated under thier own menu, what will happen to them?
Will they be integrated in this new feature or soon will be removed?
@Corrie Great feature but I was wondering if those lists are private or they can be public so if someone is viewing my profile, he can access my public lists like top 10 burger shop in my town or my recommended resto in Beirut for example, etc…
@MichelChammas@LudwigGermany EDIT: My mistake! Lists are still only private. We care a lot about sharing and publishing too, so will continue to evolve and improve all of Google Maps to deliver great functionality. Remember, this is early access to a feature still under development.
