Draw Roads on desktop step by step-Photos

Since we started our 3Thousand-roads-add-campaign-2023-TRAC I have been planning to write this post for a good while now but as you know life can be very busy.Drawing roads on the desktop using the new road editor. Of course its not new anymore its a few years old now.

I will like to point out strongly that this is very different from Road mappers.I am talking about drawing roads on the maps directly and it’s reflected for on our Google maps profile as Roads added and we get 15 points for every. road drawn.See the Official link here . According to @JanVanHaver in his post if you want to-get-rid-of-that-annoying-0-for-Roads-added click here.

How to Draw roads on a Desktop

  • Step 1-first thing is to click on the Google maps app

  • Step 2

Note that you can’t see roads that need to be drawn if you don’t switch over to Satellite mode as seen in the photo above.

  • Step 3

Click on the three horizontal lines

Before we continue it’s worth mentioning that if the country or region is closed to drawing roads it brings you to another page.

Before proceeding I usually go hunting or search or scavenge for roads to draw before proceeding to step 4

  • Step 4

  • Step 5

  • Step 6

Now it is a good practice to always zoom in very closely to make sure the road is visible and can be drawn. On the mobile the drawn roads have transparent gray colours while it’s out right white on the PC.

A typical missing road visible on Satellite mode. Here is a clue @ErmesT gave, make sure the roads you are drawing is clearly visible and is connected to an existing one. That helps for the approval.

Another thing is type of road

drawn should be indicated. I have mostly drawn local roads,a few highway and biking and walking trails. How do we Identify if its local or highway etc?

  • White = Local Road - Different size, depending of the real size of the road
  • Yellow = Highway
  • Gray = Parking Lots
  • White, thin line (or green, dotted line) = Biking / Walking trails

Adapted from ErmesT post.

Note also that road wrongly drawn could be corrected.

Above is the screenshot of the road wrongfully drawn.

Above in the photo is the corrected road. One great advantage of the desktop Road editor is that multiple roads can de drawn and submit at a go. It saves us the mistakes of redrawing a road you have previously drawn.

The end…

Now,please try reading Roads-in-Google-Maps-2000-roads-later as well as these steps mmentioned in this post. Hopefully you’ll get to learn and start mapping. Feel free to reachout in PM or even in the comment below for more questions and hints. Always ready to help.

Great breakdown, @SholaIB . I didn’t even realize there was a desktop app!

I would say that, while hunting for missing roads, taking the time to fix poorly drawn roads is also a great way to clean up the map. The points are lower than adding roads since this is just an edit, but doing this task helps immensely with navigation and street view.

Thanks to everyone for helping get these off-the-grid places mapped out!

Hello my Brother @SholaIB , Finally today am rereading this post so it can guide me on how to draw the Roads unlike how I thought …am loving it because your explanation in step by step guide is absolutely fantastic  . Easy to understand… Been trying this for long but after the notification you "can’t edit road in this region " I don’t go further. But after reading this post am certain that I can draw in some other countries. Thanks for the breakdown Shola. Happy guiding, cheers :clinking_glasses: .

Hello @Zuhralc

I am so happy you are getting around to it now. Thank you for asking me and for reading the post. Some of us are not technically minded so we need a step by step approach of things. I know how many times I read ErmesT post before undertaking and starting to draw roads.

Nevertheless feel free to ask more questions if you don’t understand any step of the post. I’m always happy to help.

Look forward to you joining us and drawing roads together to reach our target.

Happy mapping
