But the Toran really have a great history in the valley of Kathmandu.
It is believed that, the person who walks inside the temple or house from toran is purified. So, they are kept on top of doors. Usually on top, a image of Garuda(Eagled faced with human body and wings)or Chepu(Mystical Traditional Creature of Newari Culture in Nepal) is sculpted. The snake is being gripped by their hands. The Makar(another Mystical Creature) is sculpted on the bottom with its tail spread and sculpted with various designs.
The images from one side of the toran is same to the other half. It creates balance and beauty. In the centre, there is the image of the main god or goddess. Usually, the image of the deity, the temple belongs to is engraved. This unique style and tradition is spread all over the ancient temples and buildings of the Kathmandu city and is still in practise in Hindu and Buddhist temples.
So, when you are here in Nepal and exploring the traditional buildings and temples remember to keep an eye on these small details that has been making the architecture majestic.
