And today, May 4th is National Donut Day, or donut day is officially celebrated in the United States and in some other countries (as in the case of Brazil, which has a people who appreciate a good celebration, even more if there is food involved ).
This event was created by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served soldiers donuts during World War I.
The date marked as a holiday is the first Friday of June, and many American stores tend to offer free donuts to customers.
A curiosity is that in 2020 (the year in which the COVID-19 Pandemic began), the date known as the day of the donut, became a reference to the format of the number 0, to represent a day free from contamination as to COVID -19. The celebration came on October 26, 2020, when a Melbourne supermarket sold out all the donuts, considering them a symbol of hope and recovery during the long period they had been on a standstill.
In Brazil, the taste for donuts reached many states, and today there are several stores that produce different styles of donuts, with unusual shapes and fillings.
I’m going to leave here some stores that I love, and if you ever come to São Paulo, you’ll definitely have to try one of them:
