Does Google Maps restrict us from posting review of a particular place?

I had recently reviewed my experience at a restaurant. The review has been taken down, and when I try to post a new review I get an error which goes by:

“Maps can’t publish your rating and review at the moment. Try again?”

Has any of your experienced this issue recently? What could be the reasons?

Was your ‘Review’ published once?
Was it publically visible?

There are many reasons for your problem - let me understand your situation correctly.

Dear @WorldofSanjeev This usually happens

  1. When your internet is wonky
  2. or Clear the application data. You can do this by opening the Google Maps app and going to Settings → About, terms and privacy → Clear application data. You can probably try resetting the Google usage ID as well.
  3. Use another account & device to see if your reviews have been “shadowbanned”. The algorithm might have flagged your account. Reviews cannot contain: emojis, offensive words, insults, political or cultural comments. No hyperlinks, website addresses. Also, no copying other reviews, even your own reviews over on yelp or tripadvisor. That also means do not copy & paste your Google review to other sites, need to change the wording a bit.

Hope above answer helps

Hi @WorldofSanjeev

A restaurant owner can’t delete a customer’s review, only they can report it by Flag the review (On the review, click More Flag as inappropriate); after flagging the review Google investigate it though the Google’s review policies. Google may take down any review that google think that doesn’t follow Google’s review policies.

Anyway, if you believe action was taken on your Maps content or Google Account in error, you may appeal for it. Please see the Appeal Maps user-generated content policy enforcement actions.

Personally I believe reviews of some places are somehow restricted. This is based on my personal experience.

Yes, it was published without an error but I am no longer able to see it. When I try posting a new review maps throws an error. I am not able to simply submit a rating without a review too.

This is the location I am trying to review - https://maps.app.goo.gl/JhAURXDoJatDwsDJ6

Hi Abdullah,

Thanks for the guidance. How do I know which all of my reviews have been pulled down?

Hi @Manishhh

I am certain it is not an issue of the internet. I tried posting other reviews around the same time, and all that worked.

It has to be something else. Let me try the Google usage id reset - haven’t done that before. What are the implications of doing it?

Hi @WorldofSanjeev

There is no any specific option or list on your contribution tab to see all the reviews were removed.

Hi @WorldofSanjeev , and thank you for writing .
I see that there is a bit of confusion in this conversation, so I would like to try to better understand some point.

What do you mean?

  • the review is no longer visible on the listing in Google Maps?
  • the review is no longer visible on the list of your contributions?

I am asking because, when a review is “made private”, it is no longer possible to see it on the listing, but will remain visible (only to you) in the list of your contributions in your account.
Google is never deleting the review in your profile, with some exceptions (pornographic contents, child abuse) but I don’t think it is your case.
However we had several recent reports of reviews apparently disappeared from the profiles of the Local Guides. This is most probably a glitch, and can explain why you can’t post a review in there: because a review is already there, even if not visible. This will cause a conflict in the application, because it’s not possible for a single user to write more than a review on a single place.
My suggestion is to wait a few days and to check again once the actual glitch is fixed

@ErmesT Thanks for the summary. Your explanation looks plausible. Let me check this after few days to see if there is a hidden review (though I am unable to see it!).

Thanks all for your suggestions and feedback. I was able to overcome this.

What had happened: My rating & not the review was recorded in Maps. However it didn’t show up in the app and when I tried few times to post it failed. One of these days after I raised this query here, I did a web look-up on my laptop which showed the rating in the browser. I then edited the rating, added the review and posted it successfully.
