Do you Say Tigernut Milk or Tigernut Juice?

I have always been torn on how to address this delicious beverage? While some say tiger nut milk because of the creamy look, others say tiger nut juice because of how this drink is made. After reading this post, comment below on what you would call the tiger nut drink.

Tiger Nut,

also known as Cyperus esculentus, is a Yellow Nutsedge plant and quite popular on the eastern part of the world. Tiger nut is crispy and sweet (like a coconut mixed with almond taste). Though the sedge plant often comes dry and shriveled up, the nuts can be rehydrated by soaking them in water over a long period of time. Tiger nuts can be eaten freshly brought out from the ground, juiced, roasted or even boiled.

The tiger nut drink is a great substitute for cow milk and is high in fiber, calcium, vitamins E and C, potassium, and may act as an aphrodisiac.

Making Tiger Nut Beverage

is simple as you first rinse and soak the nuts in an abundance amount of water. Once you see the shriveled nuts balled up (may take several hours or overnight), you can then blend the nuts with some water. The blend may not be thick and you can then use a strainer to separate the liquid from the particles. Put the particles back in the blender and strain again after blending. Repeat this one or two more times until you have a perfect blend. While the tiger nut particles may have other uses, you can typically get rid of this.

Once You have a Refined Tiger Nut Beverage,

you can package the drink in a bottle for consumption. One thing to note is that once you have made your tiger nut drink, you should consume this as soon as possible as the life of the beverage is quite short (not more than one or two days maximum).

FarmtoJuice has been one of my favourite brands, and I believe there were some coconuts parts added to create an even naturally sweeter taste. Tiger nuts can also be used to make other desserts such as: pancakes (pastries in general), ice cream, cookies, and pudding.

After reading this post, what do you think we should call this drink: tiger nut milk or tiger nut juice? Have you tasted this delicious drink? Share below!

Can this grow in South Asia too? You said eastern part of the world in your post…ummm…which country produces it? I live in Nepal but I haven’t seen this product in any shops. Wish I could find and try it :disappointed:

Hi @Rupes01 , various countries in South Asia. I know India and Nepal for sure, but there different counties may have various local names for this drink. Have you heard tiger nut being called kunun aya?

@ChinonsoOnukwugha I prefer to call it Milk. I love it so much that I prepare it at home

But blending it puts stress on the blender. Is there a stronger grinding machine that can grind it ?

Again it hardly last beyond 24 hours. Be that as it may I enjoy it.

Nice to see this post about Tiger nuts. It is popularly called “Aya” in Hausa language. I love both the fresh and dried nuts.

I rarely drink the juice because I prefer to chew the original whole nut.

Meanwhile, I don’t think it is correct to call the liquid a milk. Milk is usually secreted by mammals and contain specific nutrients whereas plant based liquids can be juice.

So I think Tiger Nut Juice is appropriate.

@ogewuru

@luis_rich Yes, it’s very sweet!

@ogewuru Usually if I want to make the drink, I will soak the tigernuts overnight or for 24 hours. Once the nuts swells up, that puts less strain on the blender!

@EmekaUlor I love both as well! I agree, so yes tigernut juice :slightly_smiling_face:
