We know many of you use Google Photos to organize your memories before selecting the best ones to share on Google Maps. Some of you have reached out here on Connect to find out how the latest Google Photos’ storage policy updates affect your contributions as Local Guides, so we wanted to shed some light on that.
We can confirm that once you upload your photos to a place’s page on Google Maps, you can remove them on Google Photos without this impacting your contributions. Just make sure that the upload is complete before removing the photos. It may take up to several days, depending on connectivity. This way, you can free up space for more memories.
You can also save on storage by taking photos directly in the Google Maps app. Photos uploaded on Google Maps through the app do not count toward the storage limit. The only way they would count toward the limit is if you also upload the same images on Google Maps separately to your Google Photos account.
It’s easy to continue sharing as many photos as you’d like on Google Maps without taking up precious storage! Learn more about the Google Photos change on The Keyword and in the Help Center.
Thanks @DeniGu I also posted about this before but agree that a dedicated post like this is better. Also, it is my understanding that it is the photos that you store in Google Photos after 1 June 2021 that count towards your storage limit.
Thank you so much for this really wanted post, @DeniGu , to finally officially clarify what happen with our storage when we upload a photo in Google Maps.
That’s right @AdamGT , photos and videos backed up in high quality before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the storage limit. Only photos and videos stored after June 1 in high and original quality take up storage. There are more details in this Help Center article. Thanks for the clarification!
Thanks @DeniGu for sharing a useful post. This is very common asking questions for local Guides. Everyone will get clear understanding in regards to delete photos.
This article has been TAGGED for the #ConnectChallenge#BirthdayChallenge. Join the meet-ups on July 17th, 18th, and 20th!!! Check out this post for details!!!
Thanks for the update. What about photo we post on meet up album. If we delete from our our storage will those photo be deleted from album one year ago meet up screen shot photo, college.
If you delete photos from the main “Photos” section in your Google Photos, they will be deleted from any shared albums, too.
However, you don’t need to delete photos from meet-ups that you have stored on Google Photos before June 1, 2021, to free up space. Photos stored before that date do not count toward your storage limit. Only photos that you back up after June 1 take up storage.
