Discovering Kampong Phluk: A Floating Village Adventure in Siem Reap

Kampong Phluk, meaning “Harbor of the Tusks,” is a charming commune in Prasat Bakong District, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. This unique village, built on towering stilts, thrives along the edge of Tonle Sap Lake and offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the life of a fishing community that depends heavily on the lake’s seasonal rhythms.

I had the chance to explore this beautiful place, and I’m excited to share my experience with you.

:speedboat: The Boat Journey

We embarked on a wooden boat ride through the river channels that lead into the heart of Kampong Phluk. As we cruised along the muddy waters, we passed floating houses, stilted homes, and local fishermen going about their daily routines. The boat ride itself was a peaceful and memorable part of the journey, offering unique views of the floating lifestyle.

:house: The Stilted Village

The village is famous for its tall stilt houses, which rise high above the ground to withstand the flooding of the wet season. During the dry season, you can see how high the stilts stand, but in the rainy season, the water rises close to the homes, creating a floating village effect.

:deciduous_tree: The Flooded Forest

One of the most beautiful highlights is navigating through the flooded forest, where the trees grow directly from the water. The reflections, sunlight, and quiet nature of this area create a magical atmosphere that feels peaceful and connected to nature.

 Kampong Phluk Community

We also stopped at the iconic “I  Kampong Phluk” viewpoint, a perfect spot to capture memories. The people here are welcoming and kind, and their lives revolve around fishing, primarily shrimp during Cambodia’s wet season.

:sunrise: Sunset and Local Life

Kampong Phluk is also a wonderful place to watch the sunset over the water. The floating houses, colorful boats, and golden hour light create an unforgettable scene that’s perfect for photography.

I had heard about the floating villages a lot in the past, and watched them on TV and YouTube.

I remember someone writing about these on Connect, too.

Your post shows them from much closer, and interestingly, @SophatCHY
Excellent photos - I like them all :+1:

Floating villages are truly unique – seeing them in person is such a different experience from watching them on TV. It’s always amazing to learn about how people adapt and thrive in these beautiful yet challenging environments. I hope you’ll have a chance to visit one day!
