Discovering a 19-Century Ammo Store in Delhi 5-Week Challenge

My last travel was about the discovery of a 19th century Ammunition Store that was lying in the heart of a buzzing metropolitan city of Delhi yet did not appear on Google Maps.

Delhi is home to about 100 major monuments ranging from 2500 BC to 1857 AD when the British finally took control but a huge majority of those are from the medieval period. In a radius of 100 km around Delhi are 500 more monuments many of which are waiting to be discovered and added to Google Maps. I recently added a 15th Century Communication Tower to Google Maps.

I come to know about another 18th Century Ammunition storage in an Instagram post where the comments section had all the details about its location. I was shocked when I looked up the place and did not find it in Google Maps. Without losing time I took a bus and changed for another bus and then the Delhi metro to reach the VishwaVidyalay metro Station on the Yello line.

The place was described as lying inside the Mall apartment that was fortunately found on Google Maps. So I took the final mode of transport, a tuk-tuk to reach the Mall Apartment to find that this gated community was a huge residential complex spread over several acres with over 100 residences with multiple gates numbered Gate #1, #2, #3, and #4.

I deboarded the tuk-tuk at Gate #1 and the security person asked to check at gate #2. I had to walk about 200 meters to Gate #2 where I was asked to check at the next gate and finally at Gate 4 the security person pointed me to the Ammunition store built by the British. The overall shape resembled that of an Igloo with a main circular structure having a dome on the top and a tubular entrance.

The ammunition store was fenced off inside the children’s park that in turn was inside a huge parking lot. It was not maintained properly and a lot of vegetation and dust had gathered around.

The construction was in very good condition even after about 170 years bearing the brunt of extreme Delhi weather. I walked around the monument and took photos and videos both from inside and outside.

I also promptly added the ammunition store to Google Maps and before reaching home that day I got the email informing me that it was approved and added. By the time I reached home, the place was published and I added my review and video as well.

Have you come across or visited a historic monument or structure that was not yet added to Google Maps? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.

Until then… Happy Guiding

This monument is inside a residential complex so one could easily reach using a wheelchair and I didn’t see any problem for the differently-abled to access it.

Historic monument in Delhi and is not added to the Maps yet? That’s almost unimaginable. Delhi is such an old city having so many stories in it’s every piece of bricks, how can those monuments be not added to the Maps? You must be proud to be able to add this place to the Maps @TusharSuradkar . I have never been to any place that has a historic value and not been added to the Maps yet. Thanks for doing this Tushar. And thanks for sharing it with us as well.

You are right @SoniaK in that it is unimaginable but this has been due to the state policy when governments changed they decided to look the other way based on their political ideology.

It is also largely due to the lack of awareness about Google Maps among people though this is changing fast. I was not using Google Maps in a big way as recently as one year ago.
