The word “Diwali or deepavali” is taken from the Sanskrit word which signifies rows of lighted lamps.
People traditionally celebrate diwali by lighting diyas (small oil lamps made of clay) and candles, praying to Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth & prosperity) and Lord Ganesh. We celebrate Diwali by meeting and visiting friends house & family to exchange Diwali greetings and gifts.
This Festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance. In ramayan era, when Lord Ram has returned to Ayodhya after killing the demon Ravan, and an exile of 14 years, people had celebrated his returning by lighting numbers of diyas in whole city… Since then this Festival is celebrated as good over evil, light over dark.
Diwali is one of the most auspicious and holy festivals in India and the world among hindu communities.
We celebrate the festival by visiting our friends house and family to exchange Diwali greeting and gifts. Diwali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness). The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, also figures into the celebration. It is believed that she roams the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
