Did you know you can use custom map icons when creating custom maps on Google?

Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum but certainly not new to Google Maps. My name is Warren, I have Autism. I enjoy taking photos, walking my dog Sybil and playing video games.

Today I’m going to explain how you can use your own icons on custom Google Maps. First off, start by creating map icons. You can use Adobe Express for this, as it’s free! The map icons need to be a minimum of at least 150px but a maximum I would recommend is 1200px by 1200 px. Background can be transparent for icons, save as PNG. Make sure you have a Google account and are signed into Google Maps. The next step involves uploading them into a custom map, so open up https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/ , this is where Google My Maps is. Here you can create custom maps like routes, even maps featuring locations from video games and tv series like I do sometimes. Have a great time making maps and keep exploring the great world that we all live in.

Your Friendly Traveller,

Warren

What do you mean by “custom map” ? I’ve never used one, sorry

BTW welcome to the Local Guide community :slightly_smiling_face:

I mean, one you can create on the link provided. It allows you to create custom maps on the Google Maps platform. Here’s a map I’ve made: Beamish Museum Map (Museum Maps) (Maps) (Real Filming Locations) - Google My Maps

You get a map id for your map. Apparently, when you save a location as a favourite, it adds it to a private map called Favourites. The platform is called Google My Maps and it even has API so if you want to take your map and add even more features to it, you can. Unfortunately I’m not knowledgeable of the Google Maps API.

hi @warrenwoodhouse
Consider exploring Lists. They are much more user-friendly and easy to create and share. :slightly_smiling_face:

Lists? On this website? I’ll check them out. Cheers.

Not on this website but on your own Google Maps account. When using the Maps app, click at the bottom on “You”, then, “Create a List” .

Cheers Kurt. I forgot all about that. Thanks for reminding me. The lists reminds me of a feature on Google Search that lets you add things into collections, similar to Pinterest. Still, I’ll look into using the lists on Google Maps.
