Dharmarajika Stupa Significance: Ashoka’s Legacy of Faith

Emperor Ashoka, a great patron of Buddhism, built the Dharmarajika Stupa to enshrine the relics of Lord Buddha after redistributing them from earlier stupas. According to legend, he opened seven original relic stupas, except Ramagrama in Nepal, guarded by Nagas.

Initially small, the Dharmarajika Stupa was enlarged over six stages. It featured a circumambulatory path and a grand staircase in four directions. Sadly, in 1794 it was demolished by Jagat Singh, Diwan of King Chet Singh of Banaras, for building material.

Excavations revealed remarkable finds including a green marble reliquary, colossal Bodhisattva statues of the Kushan period, and a Gupta-era Buddha in Dharmachakra Pravartana Mudra.
