Dhakeswari Temple; A very good temple indeed for prayer!

Dhakeshwari Temple is national Hindu temple of Bangladesh and a historical temple. The word Dhakeshwari literally means ‘Ishwari of Dhaka’. Many people think that Dhaka is named after Dhakeshwari temple. This temple was built in the 12th century by King Ballal Sen of the Sena dynasty. Successive renovations have led to many changes in the original design of the temple. During the 1971 liberation war, the Dhakeshwari temple was badly damaged by the Pakistani forces. After the independence of Bangladesh, the temple was rebuilt according to the original design.

I have had the opportunity to visit this temple several times due to my residence in Dhaka. I last visited this temple with my family on 18th August. That’s why I decided to share with you about this temple.

Dhakeshwari Temple is located on Dhakeshwari Road, south-west side of Sir Salimullah Hall of Dhaka University. The mandapam of the temple has a standing altar with an idol of Goddess Durga made of metal. Dhakeswari temple has 4 Shiva shrines, Santoshi Matar shrine, kitchen, fruit cutting room, shoe storage area in north-west corner of Dhakeshwari temple. The Dhakeswari temple also has administrative buildings, quarters, guest rooms, meeting rooms, libraries, flower gardens and a pond.

Outside the main temple premises there is another Durga temple called Mahanagar Puja Mandap. Durga Puja is organized in this temple every year. The Durga idol of this temple is not abandoned after worshiping it! It is kept in the temple throughout the year. Just before the next puja, a new idol are remake with abandoned.

Weekly prayer times:

Maa Santoshi Puja on Friday at 10 am to 11:30 am, Shani Puja on every Saturday at 6:00 pm, Kirtan Hari Seva on Sunday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Shiva Puja on every Monday from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00 pm Durga Mata is worshiped till 9:00 pm. Also Durga Maa Puja Archana and Aarti is performed every evening at 7:00 pm.

How to go:

From anywhere in Dhaka city, you can come to Shahbagh bus stop or Gulistan Bus Stop and then hire a rickshaw or CNG auto rickshaw and go to Dhakeshwari Temple.

Accessibility:

Sadly, the main mandap of Dhakeshwari Temple is not wheelchair accessible. However, there is a good wheelchair parking facility.

:camera_flash: I took all the photos with Samsung Galaxy A50s.

Thank you all for reading my post. Happy Guiding.

Hello @Designer_Biswajit . Thank you for sharing about Dhakeshwari Devi Temple. I heard about this temple very well. I also know that this is the National Temple of Bangladesh. I have created a list of some cities in the world which are named on the name of Devi.

I have included this temple also in that list. Please check it once

Thank you so much for tagging me in this divine post of Dhakeshwari Temple… My dear @Designer_Biswajit ,

Great post of dedication… Appreciate your efforts.

Felt very happy to see your cutie daughter with the Tilak on forehead - can she wear Tilak outside the temple? I’m really inquisitive… We are unaware of your rules and regulations…

Of course, in India, anyone is free to observe their culture everywhere… No one will question you…

Excellent photos & very informative narration…

Great…

Thanks, dear friend…

Thanks for your comment.

I have seen your list of ‘cities named with Devi’. You have added many city names to the list. Thanks for sharing the post with me. I didn’t know so many cities were named after the name of the Devi.

Hi dear @TravellerG

Thanks for reading and appreciating my post.

Anyway, It is not 100% safe to wear tilak in Bangladesh as in India. Because some people of different religions don’t like it (although their number is very few). Sometimes they use crap for it. That’s why we usually don’t go out wearing tilak.
