Delhi has two Ashokan Pillars- One is at the Kamla Nehru Ridge and the other one is at Firoz Shah Kotla.
This pillar of Asoka (269-232 BCE) brought by Firoz shah Tughlaq from the neighborhood of Meerut, was set up by him in his ‘hunting-palace’ called kushk-i-shikar in 1356 CE. The contemporary historians describe the complicated transport of this pillar from its original site to Delhi by river.
It broke into five pieces in an explosion during Farrukhsiyar’s reign (1713-19 CE) and its inscribed portions were later sawed off and sent to the Asiatic society of Bengal, Calcutta in 1866. They were later sent back and all the broken pieces were joined together and the restored pillar was again put up here in 1867. The pillar now measures 10 m. In height.
Inscribed in Brahmi script and written in Prakrit language, this inscription of Asoka contains his messages and instructions for promoting the dharma and the welfare and happiness of the people.

There were two pillars transported by Firoz Shah Tughlaq from a small village in Haryana.
Firoz Shah Tughlaq was a very religious person and he believed that placing these two historical pillars in his kingdom would further bless his rule.
Here is my post on Firoz Shah Kotla where the second pillar was placed on top of a pyramidal structure.
