An American newspaper has awarded Japanâs Morioka city in Iwate Prefecture the worldâs second most recommended tourist destination.
Did you know that the area adjacent to this Morioka is important?
This is the first place where Japanese spirituality was brought to light academically, and the place where the person who sent it to the world was born. If youâre interested in Morioka, make sure to visit the area as well.
What kind of history is there here?
- Inazo Nitobe, who contributed to the establishment of UNESCO (ICIC) and published the English book âBushidoâ, which was the first in the world to explain the Japanese spirituality.
- Kunio Yanagida, who was the first to study the spirituality of the Japanese from an ethnic perspective.
- Kenji Miyazawa, a literary scholar who tried to fuse Japanese spirituality and science.
- Where Major League Baseballâs Shohei Ohtani Learned Baseball.
I will be writing articles on this important region for Japan in multiple installments in the future.
First, let me introduce Shohei Ohtani. His talent began in Hanamaki, south of Morioka.
He has won many awards including MVP in the American MLB, and has become the best in the world in various ways such as prize money.
His humanity, sociability, spirituality and morality resonate with many Japanese people. No one speaks ill of him.
In an interview, he commented that living in a high school dormitory in Hanamaki City improved his humanity and spirituality. He says that having his entire life controlled by the high school helped him develop a rational social nature.
There is no museum for him. There is only a simple exhibition in the station.
He had already received the National Honor Award, which he declined. We can see the high spirituality of the Japanese in his decision.
By the way, another player in this small exhibition hall is Yusei Kikuchi, who also competes in MLB like Shohei Otani.
This is such a place.
Next time is the story of Inazo Nitobe, who published Bushido and founded UNESCO.
