Dachau, never again

Some km from München, South Germany, you can visit with respect a memory place from WWII : the concentration camp of Dachau. From 1933 till 1945, the Nazis detained, tortured and slaughtered about 100.000 people : political opposants, Jews, Soviet Prisoners of Ward , Homo’s, Invalids and Gypsies. This is a huge place : about 70.000 detainees in 34 barracks. The irony or contempt of the Nazis is present from the main gate : "Arbeit macht frei " (“Work makes you free”). At the camp’s end, the gas chamber is called “Brosebad” (“Desinfection shower”).

You will quit with deep feelings of sorrow and disgust : achieving a respectful pilgrimage, let us hope this will never happen again.

Very interesting, Germany will be my next trip

Hello @AlainBelgium those places make a big impact on you when visit them. I found that out when we visited Auschwitz during the European Meetup last year.

By the way: did you already know that this year’s edition of the European Meetup takes place in Belgium? It’s in Gent, in June. You can find all details here

Thank you Paco for your comment.

Dachau deserves indeed a visit ; it’s giving strong feelings to all visitors, you don’t smile when you quit the place. But you feel you made something important.

Best regards,

Alain

Hello Jan, thank you for your very interesting comments. I didn’t know about Gent in June, thank you for the information.

Best regards,

Alain

Dear @AlainBelgium

thank you for this post. It is always important to remember. I do not live far away from Dachau and have seen a lot of concentration camps and other places of horror all over Europe. I think you can imagine, that for a German in my generation it is always a additional pain, as this haven’t been some stranger, but the generation of grandparents…

Thank you very much for sharing this again and please check if Gent is not a good meeting point
