If more people come forward after watching my post, then there will be the real impact of this post.
For me, being a local guide does not mean only to add location, photos, roads and updating the maps and posting in connect forum, but also responsibility to guide society and come forward at emergency situation in need.
A devastative strong cyclone; named “Amphan” hitted southern part of West Bengal (a state) of India, and later Bangladesh on 20th May, 2020. The wind speed was so high, almost 100-130 KMPH. The cyclone hitted at afternoon and continued till midnight with too much damage leading falling of electric poles, trees and power-cut and it was very badly effective for those people who lives in tin shed house or mud house…
I live in a Hostel inside our institute (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research-IISER, Kolkata) campus. Last night I could feel the effect of the storm outside, but not to do anything because going out is risky and the storm continued till midnight with strong wind…
Today, early morning following the COVID-19 protocols, wearing mask, I went outside and witnessed the damages caused. Electric poles were fallen, trees were fallen leading road blockage. Removing electric poles is never a good idea. And in any emergency condition, the road for a four wheeler (can be AMBULANCE, can be relief car etc) must be clean and smooth. So, not waiting for the Civil department or local municipality workers, I started removing the fallen trees from the roads as per my capability. I tried to clear the roads that a four wheeler should pass through.
The photographs with Before and After indicates removal of fallen trees as per my capability.
This is not something big I have done. But, if everyone (irrespective of their status in society) come forward then we can easily overcome any situation.
At last, I want to tell to all of you (in current situation specially for west bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh Local guides), if you are free and safe in your house and see road blockage by trees around your house please do not wait for the workers or municipality. Go out and remove it as any pregnant woman may be present inside an ambulance on the way to Hospital, and road blockage is not a perfect situation for them.
