Crown of Srinagar-The Shalimar Bagh

Shalimar Bagh (garden) is one of the most scenic beauties built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his begum (wife) Noor Jahan. Shalimar Bagh is well-known among visitors who visit Srinagar, Kashmir. The people dubbed this magnificent garden the “Crown of Srinagar”. The Bagh is considered the pinnacle of Mughal horticulture and is packed with magnificent trees, particularly the magnificent chinar trees (Platanus orientalis), Magnolia grandiflora, and solangeana magnolias, which is available in abundance in this garden.

We visited this famous garden in April, and because it was festival season, the place was crowded with tourists. The garden is popular among newlywed couples and families, and when I visited Kashmir with my friends, many of the visitors were taken aback by our all-male party. Walking around the gorgeous rich green environment filled with antique trees and flowers, historical architecture, and exquisite fountains may easily take 45-60 minutes.

Tourists may dress up in local ethnic costume and have their photos taken by a professional photographer in this garden, which is surrounded by flowers, trees, and meadows. According to locals, various songs from Indian films were shot here, most notably between 1960 and 1970. The garden also includes multiple ramps that make it wheelchair accessible for individuals who use wheelchairs. In the center, the fountains are organized in a stepwise pattern, with grass, trees, and flowers on either side. The garden is divided into four terraces, each with its own fountain, flowers, and trees. To get entrance to this garden, a price of 25 INR (0.3 US$) must be paid at the ticket booth. Overall, we had a nice time in this magnificent garden, and it was delightful to be greeted so warmly by the humble, polite, caring, and respectful Kashmiri locals.
