Being a foodie in Ahmedabad - a city as famous for its food as for its history - I love exploring new flavors and dishes. Yet no matter where I go, nothing feels more comforting and indulgent than a traditional Gujarati Thali (Thal), a plate filled with the true essence of Gujarat.
Unlike many regional platters, a Gujarati Thali is a beautiful balance of spicy vegetables, irresistible sweets, local favorites, and of course, a pot full of refreshing buttermilk (chhaas).
Recently, my craving led me to Patel Thal, a place about 11 kms from where I stay. A friend recommended it, and I’m so glad I made the trip.
I went with six friends, and the moment we entered, we were charmed by the ambiance. From traditional floor seating to comfortable chairs, and interiors decorated with rustic gamthi (village-style) artwork, the vibe was warm and inviting. We reached a little early, so the place was calm — which meant all attention was on us.
And then came the Thali. Served almost instantly, it felt like a feast waiting to be devoured. The spread included:
- Three vegetables (one with a North Indian touch)
- Roti & Bhakri
- Daal or Kadhi with Rice/Khichdi
- A local delight (Dhokla)
- A sweet treat (Basundi)
- Pickles & accompaniments
- And, of course, bottomless buttermilk
The food was fresh, aromatic, and absolutely tempting. Honestly, it was so inviting that I couldn’t resist diving in before taking a proper photo of the complete spread! ![]()
With its friendly pricing, quick service, and delightful atmosphere, Patel Thal turned out to be the perfect place to satisfy our Gujarati Thali cravings that evening.
