Cotton Castle

yes, friends, today I will share with you my memories from my trip in 2017. This is one of the regions that attract the most tourists in Turkey. First of all, I have to say that the photos were taken with a mobile phone. Why cotton castle? As you can see, it is such a white and beautiful formation that you cannot take your eyes off it.

how was it formed?

In fact, this is a miracle of nature. Mother nature produces this for us without being touched in any way from the outside.

Pamukkale travertines are a kind of rock. It is formed by precipitation as a result of a chemical reaction due to various reasons and environments. When the thermal water comes out of the spring in Pamukkale, it is poured into the travertine floors, and this spring water, at a temperature of 356 °C, contains a high amount of calcium hydrocarbonate, during the contact of the water with the oxygen in the air, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide fly away, calcium carbonate precipitates and causes the formation of travertine.

why is it white in color?

My cooking friends know that it’s actually completely lime. It’s like lime that forms when water comes into contact with the surface for a while☺️

disrespectful people…

The whiteness started to disappear because of some people who are insensitive to the environment. These photos I took show how the whiteness went. After my visit, entry to many places was banned. Because if the pollution continued, this place would disappear

Is there a fee to visit this place?

There is a fee to visit many museums in Turkey. but with a museum card, you can visit all the museums in the country for free. this card is about $5 right now

how can I go?

Pamukkale is a natural wonder located 20 km from Denizli. Those who want to travel by personal car from big cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya can reach Denizli and then Pamukkale by connecting to the nearest highway from their location.

Great post, @Gezendunyali , about a place that I love so much.

25 years ago the whole area was very different. Where now there is the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum there was an hotel and a shopping area, and it was possible to park the car directly near the pools, but we can talk later about that.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, that are digitized from the original ones, taken on film on 1995.

The Cotton Castle. I believe the next photo can explain clearly the reason of the name

The first time that I visited the area I was speechless in front of that beauty. The view from the side is showing the vertical, white wall of travertine which stood out imposingly on the plain

When I reached the place I walked first on the north/east side, to stay away from the crowd, and what I saw was this

Most of the pools were filled of water, and full of people. Only later they understood the damage that the people was causing to such incredible beauty.

It was mid of April when I took the photo. The water is warm. In the photo you can see only a few people, because I tried to photograph one of the not crowded areas.

After that, I have a question for you. Is this tree still alive? For me it was incredible to see a tree growing in the middle of a mountain covered in travertine for thousands of years

But after that, discovering Hierapolis was another great discover. The whole area is very different now, I will have to digitize some of the old photos, to show how it was

my dear friend @ErmesT , you have really visited every place in Turkey. The photos are very revealing and the shooting was very nice. I visited the ancient city but I couldn’t find the photos, I think I deleted them. There is even a cleopatra pool, but I couldn’t enter it because it was expensive for me at that time. People living in the region say it used to be much whiter, but I guess as people visit, its naturalness deteriorates.the tree photo was also a perfect image. I would like to capture this moment:smiling_face: :ok_hand:t2: :ok_hand:t2:

Thank you very much in advanced @Gezendunyali @So, say I plan to stay and go places for a week in Turkey’s best areas or must see areas, what is the budget for 2pax

It’s all up to your imagination. Because there are a lot of activities and accommodation options, but if you want to visit a few areas, 1000-1500 dollars for a week is enough. If we get in touch before you come, I can come up with a good plan for you. :+1:t2: @Sophia_Cambodia
