I decided to become a local guide a few years ago when Azerbaijan was in the middle of a construction boom with new locations opening to public everyday and there was little information online. It was by chance that I learned how I could add information and photos to Google maps. Ever since I posted my first review on a local restaurant, I strive to fill the information gap regarding Baku thanks to Google’s local guides program.
Personally, when I’m looking for information about a place, I prefer having a single reliable source at hand. I think Google maps is the best information platform on locations thanks to local guides. I am proud to be one. I wouldn’t say that I spend my whole spare time writing reviews about places I’ve been to. I prefer to identify places that have incomplete or erroneous information on Google maps and places that I believe deserve to be highlighted because they offer good service or because they are simply worth a visit. When I post a review, I feel like I am recommending that place to a friend. Also, I feel joy when I see that the photos I’ve added have helped someone get a idea of the place.
I reached local guides level 6 very recently. Every time I receive an email about how many times my photos or reviews have been seen, I sense that I can make a difference with my efforts. After all, my goal is to provide reliable and thorough feedback about a place - accompanied by pictures - and make sure that information is available on Google’s platform.
