Connect Live Singapore: More Than an Event, A Journey of Connections

Some journeys end when you return home. Others continue long after the suitcases have been unpacked, the photographs have been sorted and everyday life has settled back into its familiar rhythm.

It has been more than three months since I attended Connect Live in Singapore, my first experience of being part of this wonderful global Local Guides gathering. While the excitement of the invitation, the experience of Singapore and the many memorable moments remain fresh in my mind, what I find myself remembering most are the people, the conversations, the friendships and the incredible sense of belonging.

I travelled to Singapore as a Local Guide, excited about an opportunity I had never experienced before. I returned with much more than memories. I came back with new friendships, fresh perspectives, lessons to cherish and a renewed enthusiasm to continue doing what I love: contributing, discovering and helping people explore the world through Google Maps.

Looking back, I realise that Connect Live was never just about attending an event. It was about discovering the human connections behind a global community.

Here are five chapters from a journey that continues to stay with me.

Chapter 1: The Invitation That Made It All Possible

Some invitations are more than an opportunity; they are an acknowledgement of a journey.

Receiving my first invitation to Connect Live was one such moment. After three years of actively contributing to Google Maps and a year on Local Guides Connect, this invitation felt like a wonderful recognition of the time, effort and passion I had invested in the community.

It was more than an invitation to travel to Singapore. It was an opportunity to meet people whose contributions I had admired, learn from experienced Local Guides, exchange ideas and become part of a global gathering that I had previously experienced only through a screen.

The excitement was accompanied by a little apprehension too. I knew that I would be meeting several seasoned Local Guides, experienced community members and Connect moderators. Many had been part of this ecosystem for years, and I wondered what it would be like to interact with them in person.

There was another reason why this trip was special. I had visited Singapore three times before, but this was my first visit after becoming a Local Guide. I was looking forward to rediscovering the city, this time through a different lens, observing it not merely as a traveller but as someone who understood the power of mapping, documenting and sharing experiences.

The invitation brought with it anticipation, excitement and gratitude. But little did I know that the most memorable part of the journey would have very little to do with the destination or the event itself.

It would be about the people I was going to meet.

Chapter 2: From Usernames to Friendships

The most interesting thing about a global community is discovering the people behind the profiles.

For months, and sometimes years, we interact with people through usernames, photographs, comments and posts. We appreciate their contributions, exchange thoughts and occasionally engage in conversations. But meeting them in person is an entirely different experience.

My Connect Live journey began with the icebreaker meetup, where I met Kashif bhai @KashifMisidia from Pakistan, a dear friend and Connect moderator. That first meeting remains particularly special. His warm hug at the reception was one of those spontaneous moments that made me feel instantly welcome. It was the moment I thought to myself, “I am really glad I am here.” The formal photo op happened later

Over the next few days, I met several fellow Local Guides from across the Asia-Pacific region. People from different countries, cultures, languages and backgrounds, all brought together by one common interest and a shared passion for making Google Maps more useful.

There is something fascinating about finally putting faces to familiar usernames. Some conversations picked up exactly where our online interactions had left off, while others began with the excitement of getting to know someone for the first time.

A informal impromptu photo op Thanks @deepakjhic for suggesting this

I also had some unexpectedly interesting conversations. One that particularly stands out was with @AdamGT who had the good fortuntune of getting a suite and special massage taps and accessories!! I had always imagined him to be quite different from what I discovered when we finally interacted. Sometimes, meeting someone in person completely changes the mental picture you have built over time. It was a lovely reminder that there is always more to people than what we see through their online profiles.

With @SonamW and @AdamGT

What struck me most was how quickly strangers became familiar faces. Conversations flowed effortlessly, laughter came naturally and friendships began taking shape. We discovered common interests that extended well beyond Google Maps.

By the end of the gathering, the usernames had become people, the profiles had become personalities and the online community had acquired a very human face.

And perhaps that was one of the greatest gifts of Connect Live.

Chapter 3: An Experience That Became a Classroom

Sometimes the most valuable lessons come not from presentations, but from the people sitting beside you.

With a very friendly, community building Bangaldesh LG team and @TinaWill

As someone who has spent considerable time contributing to Google Maps and Local Guides Connect, I have always believed that there is much to learn from the community. Connect Live reinforced that belief in ways I had not anticipated.

Meeting Local Guides from different countries gave me an opportunity to understand how differently people approach the same platform. Their experiences, priorities and methods of contributing were often shaped by their local environments, cultures and personal interests.

Conversations about photography, reviews, videos, discovering lesser-known places and making information more useful for travellers opened up new perspectives.

I realised that there is no single way to be a good Local Guide. Some people have an extraordinary eye for photography, some are brilliant storytellers, others are passionate reviewers, while many quietly make valuable contributions by documenting places that might otherwise remain undiscovered.

Every contribution has its own significance.

What I found particularly enriching was the willingness of people to share their experiences, discuss challenges and exchange ideas. There was no sense of competition in these interactions. Instead, there was a collective enthusiasm to learn, improve and contribute more meaningfully.

The experience also made me reflect on my own journey. After thousands of contributions, photographs, reviews and videos, it is easy to fall into familiar patterns. Listening to others reminded me to keep experimenting, stay curious and look at everyday contributions with a fresh perspective.

I returned with a much deeper appreciation of the fact that Google Maps is not merely a technology platform. It is an ecosystem powered by millions of individual experiences, observations and acts of sharing.

And when people who contribute to this ecosystem come together, the learning becomes even more meaningful.

Chapter 4: Singapore Through the Lens of Memories

Long after an event ends, it is often the little moments that stay with us.

Of course, Singapore itself provided a wonderful backdrop to this experience. Having visited the city on earlier occasions, I was looking forward to exploring it once again, but this time with the perspective of a Local Guide.

Street Art on Smith Street

The familiar streets, neighbourhoods and attractions offered opportunities to observe things differently. There is a certain pleasure in revisiting a destination when your interests and perspectives have evolved.

But when I look back at my Singapore photographs, it is not just the landmarks and attractions that bring back memories. It is the people in those photographs, the spontaneous conversations, the shared laughter and the little moments in between.

Some of the most memorable interactions happened outside the formal programme. A casual conversation, a shared meal, an unexpected meeting or simply spending time with fellow Local Guides created memories that no event schedule could have planned.

I also realised how quickly such gatherings pass. One moment you are meeting people for the first time, and before you know it, everyone is preparing to return to their respective countries.

The photographs captured the faces and places, but they could never fully capture the warmth of those interactions.

Three months later, these memories have acquired an even greater significance. What seemed like ordinary moments at the time have become some of the most treasured recollections of the trip.

Perhaps that is how the best travel memories work. Their value grows with time.

Chapter 5: Returning Home, But Not Quite the Same

The best journeys don’t end when we return home; they change the way we look at the road ahead.

When I returned from Singapore, I carried back much more than photographs, souvenirs and memories. I returned with renewed enthusiasm for the Local Guides community and a stronger belief in the difference that individual contributions can make.

This is a very very special photograph. A magic like this was made possible at CL Singapore. Here LGs from India (me) , Bangladesh (@KhokonSharker , @ShafiulB , and @PavelSarwar ) are in an intense match with refree from Pakistan (@Sarbland ) who incidentally took a snack break just when this photo was clicked!

One of my biggest takeaways from Connect Live was simple: we can make so much difference.

Thank you @SharmaKK @framesbysumedh @Globe_trotter_Ish @Kumaarsantosh @Fachry_MyID and @inadwiana

Every photograph uploaded, every review written, every video shared and every piece of useful information added to Google Maps has the potential to help someone somewhere. We may never meet the person who benefits from our contribution, but that does not make its impact any less meaningful.

Meeting people who share this passion, often going beyond what is expected of them, was truly inspiring. Their commitment reminded me that community contributions are not merely about accumulating points, badges or views. At their heart, they are about making information accessible, helping people make better decisions and making the world a little easier to explore.

The experience also reinforced the importance of staying authentic. Every place has a story, every experience has a perspective and every Local Guide has something unique to contribute.

I am grateful to Google and especially @Kristen_NYC @TinaWill @Latika_Malhotra @AngieYC for creating this opportunity and to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make Connect Live Singapore such a memorable experience. Most importantly, I am grateful to every fellow Local Guide who made the gathering special through their warmth, conversations, generosity and friendship.

I may have arrived in Singapore as a first-time Connect Live attendee, but I returned with a much stronger sense of belonging to this wonderful global community.

And that, perhaps, is the real magic of Connect Live.

Until We Meet Again!
