2020 has been…an interesting year to say the least! We’ve had some ups and maybe too many downs, and with Connect Live 2020 cancelled there’s not been any major Local Guides events to fill the void.
Until now!
I had this crazy idea to bring to your screens a virtual event hosted by the community for the community. And with tremendous help and feedback from Connect Moderators (and blessings from the Local Guides team as this is an UNOFFICIAL event), the idea has evolved to a project that I’m super proud of! So, it is with much pleasure and honour that I introduce Community Live 2020!
Come 12-13 December 2020, we, the Connect Moderators, are going to try and replicate the magic of Connect Live by hosting a series of virtual sessions that are super informative and fun! We hope to close 2020 on a positive note and ignite the community flame in all of us for 2021!
Update: There are 22 Connect Moderators working on this but I can’t tag everyone but just wanted to be clear that this is a group effort! In no particular order, massive kudos to Nyainurjanah, Velvel, PaulPavlinovich, iyudhi, KarenVChin, Shirley, JaneBurunina, Kashifmisidia, LuigiZ, ermest, Kwiksatik, JanVanHaver, SP31, Julien44, AlejandraMaria, PennyChristie, CeciliaRatto, Sagir, FaridMonti, AlexandreCampbell and, last but not least, Jesi.
Event Details
- Name: Local Guides Community Live 2020 (An UNOFFICIAL Local Guides Event)
- Date: 12-13 December 2020
- Venue: Online via Google Meet
Please note that the times shown are based on UTC+1. Also, please read this post carefully as it has a lot of information to digest! Vital information will, obviously, be in this main post but I have also reserved the first few comments for further information, so please check them out too!
General Information
- Opening and closing ceremonies are 30 minutes long.
- All main and breakout sessions are 45 minutes long.
- There is a break of 15 minutes in between sessions.
- Main sessions are for bigger audiences, whilst breakout sessions tend to be for smaller groups which is why we are doing four breakout sessions simultaneously. For crowd control, we will be putting limits to the number of participants per session.
- All sessions will be recorded and published to YouTube at a later date so don’t worry if you missed out!
- We will announce some Community challenges soon. These are for fun and to get the excitement going for Community Live 2020. The challenges are not part of the application process but we would highly encourage everyone to participate in them.
How to Apply
- This event is opened to Local Guides of ANY level. If you are barred from the program, then, unfortunately you will have to give this a miss!
- Application to attend is done through an RSVP form. This form will collect private information to allow us to validate your identity, confirm that you are a Local Guide and send out Calendar invites when the selection process is completed. The private information includes: full name, email address, country of residence, country of origin, Connect
IDUsername and Google Maps profile link. If you do not have a ConnectIDUsername, please do sign up and join this lovely community! And optionally, you can also share links to your social media accounts. No data collected will be copied elsewhere, and all data will be deleted by the end of 2020.[*Update 06/11: Your ConnectIDUsername is like mine here: @AdrianLunsong *] - In the RSVP form, you must indicate the sessions that you are wanting to attend. Please do check your time zone to make sure that you are available as places are limited.
- As mentioned before, every session has a limited amount of space. This is NOT a first come, first served basis. Whenever possible, everybody will have an equal chance of attending. If it is overapplied, we will select participants randomly.
- Every session is also processed independently of each other so you may find yourself accepted for some sessions but not all.
- You can only apply once. Please do not submit multiple applications. If I managed my settings correctly, you should be able to go back into your form to make any needed changes up to the deadline.
- Closing date for applications is by the end of 29 November 2020, in your local time zone. And we will start processing the applications as soon as we can. All successful applicants will be contacted then and further instructions will be handed out at that point.
Please see below for the session details! I will also be sharing additional information about marketing in the coming days! I’m still busy creating banners etc. but needless to say, we would love your help in spreading the word for this event!
Also, do remember that this is a pretty huge event for us to manage and we’re not pros. Plus, we have lives and responsibilities outside Connect so be patient with us and help us to make this event successful. If you have any questions, do let us know in the comments. If there’s a need for it, we may create an FAQ post but for now I think there’s enough information here.
And another reminder that this is an UNOFFICIAL Local Guides event!
