Common Photo Violations

Is there a violation in this photo? It gets ‘hidden’ when I upload it - I’ve only had that happen before when there is a prominent phone number on the facade, but that is not the case here…

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen for this clearly reminder.

Hi @Reymono

It would be really helpful if you would use the tagging tool when replying to someone here on Connect. Type @ followed by the username. Type slowly. Then we get an e-mail notification and you are more likely to get a prompt reply.

I don’t see problems in your photo.

About 2-3 percent of my photos also get rejected for no reason. I keep a Google Photos album with these to figure out what could be wrong. So far it is a mystery to me.

Cheers

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

Thanks - good point about tagging.

Meanwhile I figured out the issue - notice there is a large $28 plastered on the wall - I scratched it out and the photo was accepted…

I’ve noticed this one other time with a $ amount - and many times with phone numbers. Don’t think this can be the intention - but I assume they are fighting spam…

Great point, @Reymono

Please share a link to the edited version or post a copy below for us all to learn from.

Some examples - images that were accepted after editing out $ amounts and phone numbers.

It is very common for businesses here - particularly smaller ones - to print their phone number and opening hours directly on the wall of their business. If the font is large, google with catch it and hide the photo - I’m weary of taking pictures of these businesses because I know it is more work - and I feel the image is less useful afterwards…

$ Amounts

Hi @Reymono

Thanks a million for sharing these examples

I was unable to open the link on my mobile but on desktop, they work fine.

So here are your links again hopefully working on all platforms:

The photo from above with $20 crossed out (Ximena - $28 :disappointed:

Phone number Carnicería Popeye

(the phone numbers in this shot are really small so it is surprising to me that this was a problem)

It is interesting how your crossing over the numbers does not need to be very solid. We can actually still read most of the numbers.

When I look at my rejected photos I don’t see examples I could test by striking out a price or phone number. It seems some of my rejected photos could be due to nudity and people in some shots. But most I can not explain.

Thanks again for making me and others understand this.

Cheers

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen

I don’t see any obvious problems in most of your rejected photos - even nudity is a stretch - but since you have them in google photos, have you tried to run them through “Google lens” and see what text it can extract?
For instance there is one with this text

FG BARBER SHOP
PLAZA
SKATE SKATE SHOP SHOP
HERREKLIP
Abningstider
Men- 10:00-18:00 Le 10:00-16:00
TIL 31 35 21 31
ES&TRIMS
ARENA

There is a phone number in there - pretty small but could be triggered by that I suppose…

Google lens is the bottom right icon in my google photos app (iphone).

Thanks a million, @Reymono

I edited one pizza shop with 3 clear phone numbers on the storefront. And tried to upload it again. No luck. Still not showing up on the place on Google Maps.

But I will try again with more of those rejected photos in the coming days.

Cheers

Hi Local Guides,

Thank you @MortenCopenhagen for providing updated information about the review policies. Recently four of my posts wouldn’t be posted due to a violation of the policy. Today after writing a review of the famous Davidwache in Hamburg, St. Pauli, I got blocked from writing new reviews. I am very disappointed since I could not identify any violations according to the rules listed by Google or by @MortenCopenhagen

Reviews which got blocked:

  • Review of Schlosspark Nymphenburg in Munich (I have described the beauty of the park, could not identify a violation)

  • Review of “Baum der ewigen Liebe” (Tree Of Eternal Love) within Schlosspark Nymphenburg: I told about the tree that couples carve their initials into the bark of the tree → I have deleted this post and did not rewrite it. I think the German Word “ritzen” (to carve) was the buzzword here.

  • Review of St. Nikolai (Church in Hamburg): I told about the fact that the church has 61 bells which are played by fists, and only four people in Hamburg are capable of playing the bells by fists. My guess: the German word “Fäuste” (fists). I don’t see the point because this fact is a very special one and has nothing to do with harming other people.

  • Review of Davidwache in St. Pauli in Hamburg: I wrote that this police station is very famous in Germany. I related only to the building because I didn’t need the service of the Police of the City Hamburg. I could not identify a violation.

All used photographs were mine, and I have been to this places. I have raised objections but all I have got was that the post wouldn’t be posted anyway. I have read so far that the KI is very tight but I don’t see any violation within my reviews. I am aware of that it is hard to distinguish the different meanings of a sentence only by parsing single words. Nevertheless it is very very disappointing for me since I like to write reviews in Google Maps and share my experience with other users because I benefit from it as well.

Is there any way to get rid of the ban? I know it is hard to check every single case worldwide. But in my opinion this could not be the way Google will raise the quality of the reviews by blocking any review without telling the user what exactly was wrong. I really take writing reviews respectively contributing information in Google Maps for serious.

I apologise for posting my comment here in the “Common Photo Violations” thread. If it doesn’t fit in here please tell me.

Thank you

Marco

Hi @MarcoRausch

Thanks for your detailed report on hidden reviews.

I don’t know if you only shared a summary or pretty much the entire texts.

I thing you need to consider if the spam filter can be blocking because your reviews are too generic = general remarks and not reflections of your visit and experiences.

Google put a lot more emphasis on not accepting general remarks / commentry with the latest update of the review guidelines.

Please see 4 Simple Steps to Writing Excellent Maps Reviews which is based on the latest guidelines.

Bullet 1 and 2 are what could be your problem.

Just trying to help

Morten

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

Thank you for reaching out. I have shared a summary of my reviews to give you an idea about what could be the reason for the violations. Because even with your hints I don’t see it. After there first rejection I have read the policy again in order to find out what was wrong. I don’t think that my reviews are too generic as I write detailed reviews with facts like where, when and what was is as well as opening times, accessibility, provided service (where appropriate) and what I liked/didn’t like and why.

My goal is to write useful, detailed and understandable reviews with a benefit for other people. Many other people marked my reviews as “useful” which indicates that it can’t be that wrong. For me that is very confusing and disappointing.

Thank you again I appreciate your help. I will wait a few days and see if I can create reviews again.

Best regards

Marco
