Commercial cultivation of tulips in Bangladesh #SupportSmallBusiness

Tulips are mainly flowers of hilly areas. Hilly climate and adequate rainfall in winter are most suitable for tulip cultivation. For this reason, the most tulips are grown in Europe, Central Asia, Mongolia, Russia and Mediterranean countries. However, the reputation of the tulips of the Netherlands is world-class. The country has miles and miles of commercial cultivation of colorful tulips.

The climate of our country is not suitable for tulip cultivation. Due to this, the commercial cultivation of the flower has not been seen much in the country before. Flower lovers have planted tulip trees in their gardens as a hobby. However, commercial cultivation of tulips is also possible in the country if extra care is taken. And this idea has been realized by Mr. Delwar Hossain, a flower grower of Gazipur district of Bangladesh.

About the beginning

The owner of the garden, agricultural entrepreneur Delwar said, he has been involved in flower garden and nursery work for 15 years. Earlier, Delwar has achieved great success in the cultivation of Gerbera, Tuberose, wild color China rose. In 2017, he won the Bangabandhu Krishi Medal. In 2018, a seed company called Rich One wants to gift him 1000 tulip bulbs. But did not bring due to lack of preparation. Brought next year. 25 days after planting, the first bright red flower blooms. Who sees his joy! Since then, the cultivation of this flower has started in a big way. Especially last year he was able to cultivate on a large scale. He cultivated tulips four times with this. Last year there were 70 thousand bulbs. This time 0.2 million.

How is cultivated:

High agricultural technology is used to grow this flower. The flowers are being cultivated under a shed. The shed is covered with a special type of polythene. And covered with small perforated net. The whole shed is heat controlled in a special way. Sunlight is also controlled. 15 degrees Celsius during the day and 10 degrees Celsius at night are considered as tolerant for tulip flower cultivation. Temperatures higher than this may not produce quality flowers before full maturity. Buds usually appear 18 to 20 days after planting and flowers last 25 to 60 days.

Sometimes there may be exceptions due to weather variations. Planting starts at the beginning of December. Hundreds of tulips bloom in the garden until February. If the temperature is higher than this, the yield is not good. Cultivation of tulip flowers in Delwar has added a new dimension to florists in the country. However, since it is a flower of a cold country, this flower must be cultivated very well.

Tulip varieties:

Tulip flower is a type of flowering plant suitable for container cultivation. It is also cultivated in gardens or commercially on land. It has about 150 species of plants. They cultivated 12 colored tulips of different species. These include Antartica (White), Dutch Sunrise (Yellow), Purple Prince (Purple), Timeless (Red White Shady), Milkshake (Light Pink), Barcelona (Dark Pink), Ad Rem (Orange), Lalibela (Red), The France (Red), Replay (Orange), Denmark (Orange) and Strong Gold (Yellow).

Potential for commercial cultivation of tulips in the country:

Holland is known as the world’s leading tulip producing area. Produces more than three billion tulip bulbs annually and is considered one of the major sources of export earnings. The value of flowers in international trade is about eleven thousand million euros, which keeps the economic activities of the respective countries moving. This flower of royal beauty bloomed all over Delwar’s garden. Rows of hundreds of tulips are blooming in this garden named ‘Moumita Flowers’. Still not profitable selling tulip flowers commercially.

He dreams that one day he will fulfill his financial needs and play a significant role in the implementation of the country’s GDP. With the help of successful tulip farmer Delwar Hossain, 40 thousand tulip bulbs (transformed stems used as seeds) were brought from the Netherlands and distributed to 8 farmers of Sarialjot and Darjipara bordering Tentulia upazila in Panchagarh district of Bangladesh. He hopes the farmers will benefit by cultivating tulip flowers this time. Since the seeds have to be imported from abroad, the cost is high. If the seeds can be stored in our country, then the cost of production will be reduced and people will be able to buy them at a low price. Many people are buying a copy at the rate of 100 taka. He said that it cost about BDT 62 to bring each tulip bulb from the Netherlands. He said that if anyone is enterprising, he will provide all kinds of advice and support, starting from the supply of tulip flower varieties. He is making a profit of at least BDT 4 milion a year besides creating employment for 30 people in his garden.

Tulip tourism:

India’s Jammu and Kashmir has famous tulip gardens which are famous all over the world as a tourist destination. Many species of plants can be seen here. From the first week of February, his garden is full of eye-catching tulips. Many visitors are flocking to see it every day. The visitors who came to see the flower said that this flower has bloomed for the first time in our country. So, the visitors came to watch with interest. In addition to the publication of reports in print-electronic media, after being widely publicized on social media Facebook, many people are coming from different parts of the country to see this foreign flower garden every day. All those who are coming are entering the garden by cutting tickets at BDT 100. Some are taking pictures, some are showing the beauty of tulips to their family and friends on video calls, while others are buying the blooming tulips.

Best time to go : The best time to visit the garden would be early February.

Final Words :

  • There is a great demand for this flower in our country too. It is possible to earn a lot of money by cultivating it widely and selling it at a lower price than the current one.
  • Germplasm of about varieties of tulips has to be collected. Evaluation of their usefulness in the climate of Bangladesh has to be determined.
  • Production of large number of seedlings through tissue culture has to be done.
  • A variety of bulbs are imported from the Netherlands, so the VAT tax is higher; which needs to be reduced.
  • Without bulbs, they cannot produce. Because, cultivation time or temperature is a big factor. If the day temperature was below 20 degrees, if the night temperature was below 11 degrees, then they could use this bulb a second time. Since our temperature is high, the quality of the bulb will not be there. Bulb storage is a very difficult matter. Such storage is not available in Bangladesh and it is not possible for our farmers to do such storage. It is very expensive. It will take about BDT 20-25 million to make a store.
  • It is expected to add new dimension to attract domestic tourists as well as foreigners.

Happy tourism!

@Saiyen Thanks for your comment. Mr. Delwar is acquainted to me. He told me to visit 2nd week of February since they opened L/C for import of bulbs in late. But due to early hot weather the flowers bloomed in the 1st week. So this year is also bad luck for me not to go in due time.
