Chinese New Year Celebration at Jonker Walk Melaka, Malaysia

It has been 1 week since the start of the Chinese Spring New Year 2020 which fell on the 25th and 26th of January. As with each year, most Chinese families will make the journey back to their hometown to spend time with their extended families. I had the opportunity this year as I was heading back to the small city of Melaka which is 150km from Kuala Lumpur, to visit the Chinatown of Melaka, also known as Jonker Walk. Maps location https://goo.gl/maps/vPf8NP5rcCwa8FYz5 This is a must visit place when coming to Melaka as it holds many very old buildings as well as the weekend night bazaar and cultural shows. Below are some photos of the Chinese New Year celebrations here.

[Photo above] The entrance to Jonker Walk taken on Chinese New Year’s eve, where many were having their reunion dinners elsewhere, hence a smaller crowd. The new arch of Jonker walk was set up on 2010, although the walk itself existed many many years before that.

[Photo above] As we walk through the street, the entire place is lit by Chinese red lanterns for Chinese New Year and stalls are dotted along the entire street.

[Photo above] This photo taken on Chinese New Year night, where singers were belting out Chinese New Year traditional songs. Many visitors were here from many places around the world.

[Photo above] The main walkway through Jonker walk. Lots of people, lots of lanterns and lots of stalls.

[Photo above] The preparation for the traditional lion dance with drums. Here dances carry make up lion heads and dance according to the drums.

[Photo above] The Jonker walk street filled with visitors checking out special items for sale by vendors.

[Photo above] Dumplings are a must for Chinese New Year. A stall selling myriad types of dumplings.

[Photo above] Souvenirs can be found throughout the street.

[Photo above] Origami postcards from Melaka are a new trend. Very interesting gifts.

[Photo above] As we walk towards the end of Jonker walk, we meet the Melaka river with the tourism board ride. A must try for visitors.

The above are some of the many sights and sounds of Jonker walk in Melaka. If one visits Malaysia, Melaka is a 2 hour bus journey away, and a must visit for the weekend if time permits.

Do you know if the Jonker Walk Melaka Chinatown is decorated like this throughout the year?

@StephenAbraham Thank you for sharing this slice of Malacca with us!

This must be the famed Street or walk that this restaurant in Melbourne is named after. Jonker Street restaurant. They specialise in hawker style Malaysian dishes.

@StephenAbraham What a great photography and story sharing with us. Thank you very much.

@StephenAbraham Those pictures are beautiful and it looks very festive there! I’ve never celebrated CNY in Asia and I want to experience the atmosphere of it there as there isn’t many public celebrations of it in Calgary.

Thank you for sharing, nice post!!

I visited Malaysia when I went to abroad first time. And I had good experience there.

I was inspired a lot there then I started learning foreign languages.
I would like to go to Melaka, Malaysia again if I have the opportunities.
