πŸ—ΊοΈ Char Dham Yatra: Understanding the Route Before the Journey

Before starting my Char Dham journey, one thing I wanted to understand properly was the route. Four sacred destinations, mountain roads, long travel hours and a lot of planning.

For anyone planning a similar trip, here’s the traditional Char Dham route in Uttarakhand.

:round_pushpin: The route

Delhi β†’ Haridwar β†’ Barkot β†’ Yamunotri β†’ Uttarkashi β†’ Gangotri β†’ Guptkashi β†’ Kedarnath β†’ Badrinath β†’ Rishikesh/Haridwar

The exact route and overnight stops can vary depending on your transport, weather and itinerary.

:folded_hands: The four Dhams

  1. Yamunotri β€” The source of the Yamuna and the traditional starting point of the pilgrimage.
  2. Gangotri β€” Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, surrounded by beautiful Himalayan scenery.
  3. Kedarnath β€” One of the most revered Shiva temples, with a demanding trek from the usual road-access point.
  4. Badrinath β€” Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the final Dham in the traditional Char Dham circuit.

A few things worth remembering

:bus: Mountain travel takes longer than you might expect, so avoid planning an overly tight schedule.

:sun_behind_rain_cloud: Weather can affect road access and trekking conditions. Check official advisories before travelling.

:hiking_boot: Kedarnath requires additional trekking preparation. Plan your stay and physical readiness accordingly.

:hotel: During peak pilgrimage season, booking accommodation and transport in advance can save a lot of last-minute stress.

One thing I like about this journey is that it’s not just about reaching four temples. The route itself takes you through mountain villages, river valleys and landscapes that make you want to stop and look around.

I’m sharing this as part of my Char Dham travel series, where I’ll explore the journey one step at a time.

If you’ve completed the Char Dham Yatra, I’d love to know:

Which stretch of the route did you find the most beautiful, and which one required the most planning? :backhand_index_pointing_down:
