Chapada Diamantina National Park - Brazil #2

In the first episode of our series of publications about the Chapada Diamantina National Park in Brazil, I’ve talked a little about the park that is world-renowned for the natural beauty of its waterfalls, mountains and rivers. Today, we are going to talk a little bit about the iconic Mosquito Waterfall.

Located in the Fazenda Santo Antônio, its name “mosquito” refers to small diamonds that were commonly found there in the mining era (not the insects). To visit the falls you must pay an entrance fee (equivalent to four US dollars) when you arrive at the complex.

This amazing waterfall is almost 70 meters tall (230 ft.) and is located about forty minutes by car from the city of Lençóis (main tourist complex in the region). It is also necessary to cover a small 1.5km (1 mi.) trail with downhill stretch to get there. But, relax, the physical effort required is light to moderate. So, just be prepared.

In the pictures below, taken by myself, I hope to encourage you to get out of your comfort zone. These photos might inspire you to travel to Chapada!

See you.

That looks awesome, @MatheusRequiao !

Do you know perhaps why the water has this particular yellowish color?

Thank you for the comment @Stphn . The waterfalls, lakes and rivers of the park have different colors depending of the location and the season of year. This is due to the fact that there is a high concentration of minerals there. For this reason, the park was formerly known for the exploration of minerals: mainly diamonds, gold and other precious stones. Today the park is known for its natural beauty and it’s protected against mineral exploration. There is still a lot of diamonds there and some illegal explorers.

@Stphn An interesting fact: the largest emerald in the world was found in a city a few kilometers from the park, valued at $370 million US dollars. The stone was sold illegally and sent to the US and is in dispute between the Brazilian and American courts.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, @MatheusRequiao , it makes sense!

Are there any more diamonds like that? We can split the money.

Hi @MatheusRequiao ,

Thanks for sharing this great post with the community! I would never guess that the Mosquito Waterfall was named to a small diamond and not to the insect.

I’ve noticed that here in this post, you have used a picture that you have shared in the first post of this series. I just want to let you know that each Local Guide can upload here on Connect up to 1000 pictures, so I recommend you to avoid to share one photo more than once.
