Capturing the scale of Antarctica

I recently was lucky enough to go on a trip to Antarctica. I asked one of the expert guides what continues to surprise him about this place and he said, “just the sheer size and scale of the landscape, it always takes my breath away.”

That incredible scale is part of what makes this trip so special, but it’s also an interesting challenge when you’re trying to document it in pictures, whether it’s for Google Maps or just for personal albums.

If you take a picture of just a mountain top, it can actually seem quite small unless there’s something else in the shot to show its true size. So I always tried to put something (or someone) in the foreground to give people seeing the photo some sense of just how vast the landscape was. Sometimes it was a footprint in the snow, a wave from our boat, or if I got really lucky, a penguin :slightly_smiling_face:

We went on shore a couple times to see old outposts, but very briefly. They try hard to avoid contaminating the ecosystem.

The weather was cold but not too bad. And it took about two and a half days journey from the tip of Argentina to get to the coast of Antarctica.
