There’s something relaxing about the quiet and beauty that you experience when watching a sunrise. When we consciously make the effort to take scenery, landscape and/or nature shots at sunrise, it is mostly because there are considerably less people around. If you haven’t tried to shoot beautiful sunrise pictures before, use this early morning opportunity to try something new. The trail to the top of Cowles Mountain is 1.5 miles long, which makes the round-trip distance a total of 3 miles, and with the total elevation gain around 950 feet it will take 1-2 hours, depending on your fitness level and how long you hang out at the peak to take in the view. And the 360 degree view from the summit will make the effort well worth it, as Cowles Mountain is the highest point in the city of San Diego at 1,592 ft elevation. There is mostly low-growing vegetation along the trail, giving opportunities for gorgeous views the whole way up. We’ll meet one hour before the sunrise, at 04:55 AM, on the trailhead for Cowles Mountain. It is located on Golfcrest Drive, across from Cowles Mountain Coffee Co., near the intersection of Golfcrest Drive and Navajo Road. Note: For maximum sharpness, grab a tripod and coffee
