Yay, it’s the weekend!! I decided to post a second challenge this week, right before you all break off for your weekend so that you can have something simple to do when you are free! I hope you’ve all been enjoying these “Name the Dish” challenges which I think is a great way to learn about new dishes/ingredients that may be foreign to you!
Throughout these challenges, I’ve been surprised that some dishes are unknown to some and I’ve soon realised just how lucky I’ve been in getting exposed to so many different types of cuisines. Recognition of Asian food comes from my upbringing in multicultural Malaysia with it’s huge melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian and ethnic cooking. And I’m aware of some Western food because I watch a lot of TV (cooking shows) and also just through my own experience living here in the UK for the past 20+ years.
However, the point that I want to make is that at some point in my life, these dishes are also completely foreign to me and we should take whatever opportunity we get to broaden our horizons and learn about new cultures through their food/drinks! #LocalGuidesKitchen certainly is giving me an educational experience not just about cooking but also about the local story behind each dish and I’m forever grateful for that!
Anyway, enough about reflecting on life… let’s bring out the challenge!!
If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out the past challenges for the blue , green
and orange
dishes! Answers are somewhere in the comments but obviously try to answer them before you see the answers!
The challenge is really simple, try and name all the dishes that you see in the images posted. They are all numbered and I’ve also provided zoomed-in images that show the dishes slightly better!
When providing your answers, please also indicate the number of the dish that you’re referring to. And I would highly encourage you to answer in your own language too and if you can, do also add the English translations. It’s super fun to see what the dishes are called locally!
For example:
- Ikan bakar (grilled fish)
- Ais krim (ice cream)
… and so on. And you don’t have to be super accurate!
I am also going to pre-empt the tricky dishes so here are the super close-ups:
Enjoy this latest challenge! Tag your foodie friends and see if they are any good at it! And don’t forget that the final #LocalGuidesKitchen show is taking place this Sunday, 11th April at 2PM (GMT+1). As it is the final show, we are doing a mini ‘party’ towards the end where I will invite you all to join in to the Google Meet call too! Bring your own food and drinks to the party, get your party hat on, make some confetti to throw and we’ll also have a brief chat on the whole series too!
