Can you change dates for uploaded (old) photos ?

I’m busy with processing old photos. These photos are from the '70’s and '80’s of the previous century. When I upload a photo to Google’s maps, it appears ok, but it states the date of the photo is the upload date. Not the date taken.

Can you change this or should you first change the date of the photo on your PC first. Anybody out there that has any suggestions?

BTW, the date of the uploaded file (of the photo) is the date of the scanning of the negative, so that is also not the date taken. I’ve used the program GEOSETTER to add the EXIF info for the right location so a photo viewer can use the option to ‘show on google maps’

The reason I upload these photos is so users of Google Maps can see ‘into the past’ so to speak, that’s why I want to be able to change the reported date of the photo as the upload date is not really relevant, especially for older photos.

Hi @rialtho58

The scope of Google maps is to inform the users about the actual aspect of a business, or a point of interest. In this way you will know how a business is, before the visit.

Even if uploading old photo can be historically interesting, probably Google Maps is not the right place for doing that.

In any case, to answer your question, the photo in maps are showing the uploading date, not the date of the shot

Hi @rialtho58 ,

Welcome to Connect and thanks for having checked with the community! : ]

As @ErmesT kindly mentioned (for which the reply would be accepted as Solution for the direct information for the main inquiry), I just also wanted to add that in many cases photos from an earlier time may not always guarantee to align with the Maps User Contributed Content Policy (perhaps with the Format Specific Criteria - resolution, context and such aspects).

Why not share with us here on Connect the photos, as I do believe the interesting stories behind them could be really well presented in the Local Stories or even Travel category. (the current post would be relocated to How-tos, as it would be more suitable with the main subject)

Hi Sonny, I found out the items you mentioned wrt old photos and the policies of placing photos.

When I was browsing through the existing photos, I found several that are not according to the policies stated. Take a look at this link for instance: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Triumphpforte/@47.262611,11.3947771,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1sAF1QipOb2s_ZjPyvD12_Ti8k6FO6aVSMSY6_Pv7UsPA0!2e10!3e12!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipOb2s_ZjPyvD12_Ti8k6FO6aVSMSY6_Pv7UsPA0%3Dw203-h152-k-no!7i2592!8i1944!4m7!3m6!1s0x479d6be37458e407:0x5059da7b10494746!8m2!3d47.262611!4d11.3947771!14m1!1BCgIgAQ#

And there are several other pictures that would be shown a red cross in the examples that show which pictures you should upload. So I wonder, is there really any moderation in these pictures? I guess not, way too expensive probably. I remember using Picasa and adding photos in Google Earth, but I’ve not used these options/programs for ages now as I believe they have been superceded by other solutions like Google maps.

Thank you for the link @rialtho58 . In the future please use @ to tag the person you want to mention (in this case it was @sonnyNg ) so he will be notified about the tag.

You are absolutely correct, and this is one of the reason why on Maps we have reporting functions, for a single photo or (on Android) also for the whole profile.
