Can no longer upload images on Google Maps "No gallery app is available maps google"

Hey,

does anyone know if there will be a fix to the issues that you cannot upload images any longer on Google Maps? It started happening since I got my Pixel 5, but I believe it is an Android 11 issue?

When you select a venue on maps and want to add photos in any way, you get this error message: “no gallery app is available maps google”, which as a local guide is clearly a tragic thing.

It seems there is a workaround by selecting the images through an photo app and then sharing them to Google Maps, but this is obviously less than ideal.

Hello @danieldreimer

I had the same problem but I think it has been resolved. I thought I was the only one facing that. Try again and see. Mine worked like former times again this evening

Hey, no I just tried. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me. I cant even uninstall and install the app as it is preinstalled on the phone :disappointed:

Hello @danieldreimer

There are some changes in the way Maps allows users to upload photos. But I find the most of the initial glitches are resolved now.

Further, Maps relies heavily on Google photos as the leading source of pics.

Hence, to overcome the current problem, the following steps would help.

Clear the cached and stored data of both Maps and Google Photos.

Rollback all the updates in both the apps and then update to the latest version.

Allow both the apps to have access to file, media and location.

Ensure that you have installed the latest Android update released on 5th October.

That would help in the resolution of the current problem.

Hi @danieldreimer

I just wanted to let you know that uploading photos to Google Maps directly from Google Photos has now become my default method for upload of pics to google Maps. This is because it is easier and faster than manually finding the correct pin on Google maps. This works faster for about 70-80% of my photos. The remaining 25% I still need to find or create first on Google Maps.

So I recommend you give it a chance.

I know this is not a solution to your problem, just something to consider.

Hi @MortenCopenhagen , thank you for your feedback. I can’t quite see how this would be faster as there are several more work steps involved especially when you want to attach pictures to your review, which is how I usually operate. Additionally, it seems you need to select the venue you want to upload pictures to first on maps. So there is several back and forth, which does not seem appealing to me at all.

Hi @danieldreimer

All photos uoliaded to a place will after a short delay automatically show up under your review of the place. So I don’t think there is any real difference between uploading photos together with a review and just uploading them to the place.

Upload from Google Photos is in my experience faster because it involves fewer steps. The advantage depends on how well Google Maps can guess and suggest the correct place. So it needs to be bigger well established places in not to densely populated areas and your GPS should be working well. If that is the case it certainly saves me time when uploading a batch of new photos.

If you don’t use Google Photos anyhow then I can easily understand it involves more steps for you.

And new places and smaller places in areas with tons of pins slows down the process.

Hey @C_T , this might be a stupid question, but just to make sure that deleting stored data will not delete my progress on maps or my photos on Photos? Also, how do I rollback updates?

Thanks

No. Nothing will happen to the data on servers @danieldreimer .

All the apps cache a lot of data locally for faster response. However, that becomes irrelevant over a period and then it becomes necessary to purge that periodically.

To clear that you can follow these steps on Android.

Open the settings. Then look for Apps in that. Then select delete the stored data and that will delete the cached data also.

@danieldreimer - I posted about a similar issue back at the start of October that’s still with me now, I don’t get the message about not having a gallery app though and if I leave the screen open long enough images do start to appear.

It also happens after submitting images to places.

Unsure if it’s related in any way but the symptoms are similar, if not quite identical.

I cleared the data / cache on mine and it caused the whole app to run incredibly slowly, it didn’t display content properly and stopped responding each time I tried to open an entry on Maps, this got better with time and reboots.

What it didn’t do is help with the issue with the gallery (although it did prompt me to give permissions to access photos again so maybe it will help your problem).

Hey @turbotapeworm thanks for the input/feedback much appreciated!
