As Local Guides, we know the value of real-world knowledge on Google Maps. If you’re cycling across Sri Lanka from Jaffna’s flat roads to the winding hills of Ella you have a unique advantage: you see things most others miss.
Here’s how we as Local Guides can contribute while cycling:
-
Report and Fix Road Issues
Spotted a missing road, a wrong turn, or a newly paved shortcut? Tap Edit the Map in the Google Maps app to report it. Your contribution helps others plan safer and more accurate routes. -
Add Bicycle-Friendly Paths
Many cycling-friendly routes (quiet village roads, coastal paths, or forest lanes) are still unmapped. Add them with proper labels like “paved,” “gravel,” or “steep incline.” -
Upload Helpful Photos
Use photo uploads to show road conditions, slope gradients, or bike repair stops. This makes your edits more reliable—and more likely to be approved. -
Add Descriptive Reviews
Leave reviews for rest spots, tea shops, and local attractions with cyclist-relevant info: bike parking, road safety, water availability, etc. -
Use Lists & Saved Places
Create and share cycling route lists (e.g., “Best Sunrise Rides in Central Sri Lanka” or “Top Scenic Cycling Trails Near Galle”) with your fellow Guides and tourists. -
Go Offline, But Stay Active
Download offline maps in advance. Even without a signal, your GPS location works—and you can contribute later when you’re back online.
Your local knowledge is power. As cyclists, let’s keep Sri Lanka’s map rolling forward—one route, one photo, one review at a time.
