businesses on maps of Iran is terribly out of order

Someone’s gotta do something about it, it just HURTS to look at the maps here man  seems like googlers are too superficial in their fancy worlds to discuss some real issues.

Its 21st century, could you believe that Google Maps doesn’t have an option to customize businesses you prefer to show up on maps, or the ones you want to hide?

Hi @Kia_Faraji

Unfortunately, local guides are not allowed to edit and contribute to Google Maps in all areas. Just like GMB can be banned. Most likely your government or some other local authority has obliged Google to disable user-generated content for political or safety reasons. Or the ban could be put in place to stop spammers.

So there is not much you can do about it, except wait.

I don’t know the situation in your area, but if this happened where I live a lot of us would be lobbying in many different ways to get this decision overturned.

I don’t know if this is advisable where you live. Please be careful.

@Kia_Faraji most likely @Amiran will be able to give you most info / tips on the situation in your country.

Thanks dear @JanVanHaver for tagging me.

Hello @Kia_Faraji

As my friend @MortenCopenhagen mentioned there may be some limitations somewhere for some tools but still, there are lots of tools that we can use to help others.

In this age, Google prepared suitable global tools for businesses (Google My Business) but you know, unfortunately, Google can not provide business services to Iran because of the US sanctions that Google should follow and this situation is about all US companies.

Also, note that here is the Local Guides platform and all of our activities on the map should be volunteering not business activities. But as I see you’re only focusing on business topics for your customers.

Anyway please tell us what hurts to look at the map here?

If you mean not applying or pending the edits, this is totally normal. Edits need the review process because not all edits should be applied and not all applied edits are exactly correct. You may saw this article in this case. But doing more activities based on the rules will increase the chance of approving edits over time.

For example in one other thread, I guided you not to enter the Persian name in the English field (Now we have an option to change app language directly). I asked to enter the landline number because it is the primary phone number. But still, you’re continuing your previous method and I don’t know why.

Also, one other rule is preventing descriptions in name, and in many cases, you’ve entered keywords and descriptions for the places you added.

Since these activities aren’t following the rules and tips, all affect your future edits and decrease the chance of approval so you may be unhappy about future edits.

On the other hand, I’m not sure about the phrase you told “show up on maps, or the ones you want to hide” but if you mean visibility of an icon on the map, you’re right. This is only a system decision which icons to show and not all places will be visible without the search. This is not a problem at all, this is the way system works and it is described here. It helps places on the map to be visible when people want them. If all places are visible on the map then there will be no space for the base layer of the map.

I hope these simple things help you to continue your contributions by following the rules that help you, the system, and also the map users to be happier. I suggest you dedicate some time to learn about the best practice for contributing. For a Persian guide, feel free to message me here or contact the Iran Local Guides community. Focus on guiding people in a true way and you see there are lots of things to do :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @Amiran

I’m already aware of the sanctions, what I’m trying to say is that there should be something done along with sanctions that prevents incorrect data, maybe giving some top contributors like yourself full control of maps, so that others can communicate for the problems they can’t handle themselves.

If my contributions were only about business, why would I even bother making posts about the incorrect data in Iran a few times? I contribute for old people with small businesses when I see one, without telling them, I did a [virtual tour](http://Zeitoon%20Park Jahan Nama, Karaj, Alborz Province Google Maps) of our local park, planning to do a bigger one at a bigger park soon… I find your opinion unfair.

About saying I still use cellphone numbers, you’re being totally unfair, you did see the places I added photos to recently, they were all landline numbers.

About not entering Farsi titles in English fields, I did took your advice, but I found out there’s an address indexing problem with Google that makes the businesses in Farsi address not to show up in category search, here’s an example:

Search for پیکو کالر در کرج

There are 2 branches:

پیکو کالر (سریزدی)*

پیکو کالر (آبرنگ)*

*Barackets are branch designations

But only one of them shows up! I have reasons to believe the problem comes from the address indexed in Farsi, experienced other places like that too with Farsi addresses, can’t really recall now.

And when you enter English address in Farsi-language app, it automatically turns it into Farsi, and the mentioned problem happens…

By saying “businesses you want to hide/show” I mean a simple customization for the user, just an example: maybe I don’t like to see supermarkets and I’d like to see barber shops, if the user wants it that way for his/her own account, then it’s gotta be it!

About what hurts, there are just too many examples:

Thank you for the clarification @Kia_Faraji

Except for Business services and official cooperations with the companies (like transport companies) all other tools to edit the map are available here in Iran like other areas of the world, and we can correct data if needed. We had the Regional Lead program several years ago that was like what you mentioned, we’re not aware of what we’ll see in the future but now it depends on a users behavior on the map (not level) to have more power for editing the incorrect data.

I know that you have also some other contributions and this is really good. I told you to focus on it, increase such contributions, and put this as your main goal in the Local Guides program. This brings a good feeling to you.

Oh, I’m not unfair Kia. sorry if you thought so. I told you about trying to add a landline number. I refer to both preventing from adding cell phone number, and also leaving the phone field empty. This is a tip and there should be a way to contact a place directly, especially when there is no business service in Iran to contact the place by app. So I checked your recent list before and added landline numbers myself. I’m sure you’re doing it yourself for the future.

Even if indexing doesn’t work well (while it works), it is not a reason to contribute in an incorrect way. You should let the system read data completely and connect them with data from the whole web. This takes some weeks/months.

Also, about the address, you can add an English name in the English field to add an English address directly.

Or you can use the Persian map to add a Persian name but after approving the addition, you can use the English map to fix the address in English. But it is not true to add a Persian name in the English field. Sure, it is not also true to enter an English name/address in Persian fields. Every time if you want any solutions, just ask to get help.

Also, as a side tip, note that adding branches’ names is a kind of description and is not true. So I removed those parentheses. This also helps for better indexing by the system.

I got the point about it. So you mean show/hide icons of the categories. We have an option to search categories and the most suggested ones are below the search box. But I don’t think check boxes for more than 4k categories is something user-friendly. Although it may contain some general ones. So you can complete your idea and if it didn’t discuss before, post it in the Idea Exchange.

And about wrong info on the map. This is also normal and is about all over the map. The data over the map are huge and so this relates to the system and good local users for checking and correcting it. The system is learning but it is not still complete to do what humans do. And because of this, we’re contributing to the map continuously to prepare good data and fix wrong ones. You can check #LGCTM by @JanVanHaver which is a good reference guide in this case.

The examples you prepared are very simple ones, and I’ll put the time to fix them. Like what I did about “Iwan Book” in the first screenshot. But again I suggest you learn more about accurate contributing as long as trying to contribute with the most accuracy to help the map and then your ability to help the map, increases. Ask us whenever you need help about contributing.
Happy guiding :white_flower:

I know it does not satisfy all of your needs because it cannot @Kia_Faraji but I have marked the answer of @Amiran as the solution to help the next person searching for the same information.

On the idea of giving control to top contributors, that used to be in place and in many instances that trust was abused and the facility is now gone. It is unlikely to return.
