Business asking me to delete my photos

Hello all, not sure where to post this but I wanted to bring up something that happened and hear your thoughts.

I just had a business owner (an acupuncturist) contact me via my personal email which she has because I had been a client of hers in the past. She said she is “making some changes” to her business and so asked me to delete all of my photos that I added.

The photos have about 13k views which is quite a bit and I was hesitant to delete because they have so many views and the photos can still be helpful to show the vibe of the business. it’s not all photos of the entire space, it’s like photos of cute signs and the outside of the store etc.

I know it is courteous to the owner to delete them but it makes me sad to have to do that. What are your thoughts?

Great question, @LeanneM .

I would probably ask for a better reason why she wants to have your photos removed, and explain to her that you value the views your photos of her place got.

Maybe she can convince you on some of the photos and vice versa.

If you share a link to the place I would be happy to check if you followed all the guidelines.

Cheers

Morten

Hi @LeanneM

Welcome back in Connect, I’m happy to see you here, even if the situation is a bit weird, isn’t it?

Every photo of every business become old when a business make a change, so the new photos, if the quality is good, are “naturally” appearing first, and the oldest one are moved down, but are interesting memories of the evolution of a business.

In my opinion the old photo are in some way the “witness” of the change, and it is very easy to see when each photo has been uploaded, because each photo show the upload date (on desktop) or the age (a week ago, five years ago) on mobile. I think this is what you should explain to the business and, if they are close to you, you can add that “I will be happy to add some new photo” if you contact me when you are ready with your changes.

Understand what was pass to about the photos. Yet there is a law about ownership and copyright laws.

Legally the business can request you remove the photos, since it is her business. However, photos of outside building is public access, there is no law state that photo can not used for publication ( such here and google map, etc.)

When press and media take photos and videos, usually a company by a permission form. Problem is that since VICOM took over just about everything in the media, like YouTube , cable, news media , music rights , etc. They made it hard on everyone.

Agree with last reply…you can ask. The business, explain what your doing, explain what Google Map is about. You might keep the photos posted.

Ask her also why she wants the photos removed? What is offensive about the photos. If the photos showed people, who they don’t want be seen, or who might ask the company not to publicly post.

Question, did you inform her and explain what you do? If so, what was response, and was it stated before the posting.

When a business transitions, it means the review and photos would need to be updated so that viewers won’t have a wrong impression of their services as they may claim online and offline. So, it would be appropriate to take new photos of the the new activities and edit your reviews and highlight the changes.

I think that is what they person is basically seeking. So, ask to visit and take new photos as the old ones may become irrelevant weather they still get the numbers.

Hi @Wheelchair4x

You mentioned the legality of shop owners requesting us to remove indoor photos.

Please have in mind that Connect is a global forum so the laws are likely not the same everywhere.

All the best

Morten

I had to apologize to FedEx Mombasa after the Manager was almost sacked because photos I took showed the office in a mess and it was bad publicity for them

Understand what your saying. Laws difference from place to place and state to state. But this is still considered as MEDIA, so those laws still apply. I did some fact finding on this, also inquired a few lawyers for their input on the matter.

You can also go to YouTube see about photo copy laws.people who had experience this issue. Also how VICOM plays in all this.

I know from pass experience… Photography and reporting how easy was get fine and law suits filed against someone just because the permission procedures were not implicated.

Hope this helps .
