Bush apples (paeh)🍎🍎🍎

It’s a good while since I last wrote a decent foodie post,so this one is long overdue. It’s not a very delicious sumptuous or yummy dish but a very simple fruit I found. It’s new to me, very new but quite interesting. I haven’t found in Nigeria, nor in Ghana, but anyway it exists here in Liberia.

Funfacts about the Bush apples

  • From all indications it’s a tropical fruit, therefore I will not be surprised if it exists in Indian,Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka or somewhere in South America.
  • It breaks open into 2 nice pods if cracked correctly.
  • It makes a nice pop sound that I like when it’s cracked open.
  • It’s not cultivated but grows wild in the forest.
  • It’s not a tree,it’s of the family of the vine botanically speaking. It creeps on other plants
  • It’s commonly found during the dry season, when the rains are all over
  • The locals in the area of Liberia I discovered it call it “Bush apples” or Paeh in the local Bassa dialect

Taste

  1. The interior of it is gueey and brown/white
  2. It has seeds that can be licked or chewed
  3. It has a very shape sour taste but can be sugar sweet when it’s over ripe.
  4. It has some white substance at the edge of the pod that can be used as a glue.
  5. The size can be bigger than what’s in the photo above

These are my perosnal original discovery from investigations from the Locals in the village where I found it. Please feel free to let us know more about it, if you’ve ever come across it in your own locality. Thank you in advance.

Cheers

Hello @SanjayBDLG

Thank you for letting us know. I’m not surprised that this fruit is available in Bangladesh like I said. It’s interesting to know all the same.

Please what’s it called over there? Happy guiding and nice to interact with you.

first time i saw it @SholaIB did you collect these? i was wondering what kind of tree you have actually☺️

Hello @Gezendunyali

First time for me to see it too and I was surprised really. Having been in Africa for about 4 decades !!!

That’s why I thought to share it here and see who knows it and who doesn’t. Still waiting for comments regarding it.

It doesn’t grow on a tree, it grows on creepy branches of shrubs like I said in the post.

It’s found in the forest,it not even cultivated but grows in the wild forest. It’s a wonder really.

Cheers

Hi @SholaIB

I can say that I have never seen it grow in Europe.

Perhaps you can find it in some special shops that sell tropical food, but usually the travel of the fruits reduces the taste.

Thank you for sharing the post, it’s a great fruit.
