Bug report: update location / add new POI

Hi

@MashaPS , I hope you can help.

Not sure who is affected exactly as I didn’t see anyone else reporting it. The bug happens on my 2 Samsung Android devices running Google Maps 10.46.1 on Android 9 and 10 (kernel 4.9.112 and 4.14.117 respectively). The 2 bugs started this week for sure since I use the app very often.

#1

Whenever I try to update a POI location, I go the normal route (Suggest an edit, change name or other detail, update location on map). Clicking on “update location on map” goes nowhere at all. The app is completely unresponsive. More: using the cross on the top left is also unresponsive. Using the Android back feature allows to exit the “suggest an edit”. At this point the only way for me to edit a location is to go on my desktop computer.

#2

POI addition does not upload photos anymore. Normal behavior during POI addition is that after selecting the photos, they do appear within 5 seconds at the bottom of the addition screen before submission. Now they don’t appear anymore. If I choose “add photos” again, it shows me the photo selection screen with the pictures I already selected “pre-selected”, so the app knows I selected the pictures but it does not attach them to the submission. So once I click the submit, of course Google Maps says “You should add some pictures” and I say “yes, please let me”, once again the picture selection screen shows my photos preselected, but they are like a ghost to the Google Maps app and they never upload.

Current workaround: post the pictures after the POI has been accepted which is a bit risky since I dont know how much pictures are taken into account in the addition decision.

No point in sharing screenshots of the app since no error appears in either case. Just app misbehaving as per my description.

Not sure who can help. Hopefully someone knows how to bring it to the proper developers.

Thanks!

PS: In order to have a nice picture for my bug report I asked Google photos to find me some bugs in my photo collection and these 2 came up, I thought they’d make a perfect illustration of intertwined bugs :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @Herve_Andrieu

Did you try the usual tricks like:

  1. Restart you device
  2. Clear the cache and other data
  3. Force stop Google Maps
  4. Delete Google Maps and install it again

Also, if you did not take the photo your self the moderators will ask you to delete it. I’m sorry.

All the best

Morten

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

Reboot/restart, force stop, delete/update Google Maps.

I can’t find the clear application data in my version of Google Maps (I tried to follow the instructions from https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/4247755?hl=en )

I searched “Google Photos” not “Google Images” :_) With so many services with names so close to each other, it’s quite often easy to mix things up with Google… So my picture, my copyright :slightly_smiling_face: (I already had Google take down some of my post where I was merely quoting abstracts of a much larger article, which I was considering “fair use”, so I don’t bring anything from outside anymore since the censorship is strict around here…).

Thanks for the suggestions anyway!

On my android it is

Settings

APPS

APPS

SEARCH for Maps

Then Storage

Then Clear Cache

And if needed also

Clear Data

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen .

Clear cache and clear data won’t change anything.

The bugs are still there (tested both).

In any case, the fact that someone would be forced to jump these hoops for the app to work would be a bug in itself.

Are you also running 10.46.1 (#1046101240 to be precise) ?

Version 10.46.2 (1046201244)

But I doubt that is the reason. Sometimes other applications can mess up the Ram.

Possible but I have 2 devices and not the same apps.

Hi @Herve_Andrieu ,

Thanks for reaching out.

I would first recommend to Clear cache & cookies and install the latest versions of the applications as suggested by @MortenCopenhagen .

If that still does not give results, please upload screenshots here so we can look into it further.

Thank you

Hi @MashaPS

I already tried the clearing of cache/data, reinstalling the app, etc, etc suggested by MortenCopenhagen . No improvement.

As mentioned the screenshots do not show anything, but I guess you have to go some sort of procedure:

Screenshot #1 shows the suggest an edit screen where the “Update location on map” button is completely unresponsive.

Screenshot #2 shows the attempt the leave the Suggest an edit screen not working when pushing the cross on the top left (you can see the cross remains greyed):

Screenshot #3: shows the “add a place” page. From there I click to “add a photo”.

Screenshot #4 I select pictures for the new POI

Screenshot #5: Google Maps believes there was no picture uploaded (The addition still looks like #3) so when I submit it asks for pictures:

Hello @Herve_Andrieu
I attempted editing “Verano at Delray”. The arrow turns dark blue the moment I change something.
Also, I can move the pin.
The other two errors I can’t replicate as I don’t have any new place to add.

Thus, in my opinion, the bug is related to specific devices.
Nevertheless, the solutions suggested were the routine ones, and there is nothing odd in that. Once, I did even a factory reset when I couldn’t resolve a nagging problem.
Trust, you are not using any background services like VPN, Ad-blockers, Anti Virus, Auto cleanup apps, DNS routers etc. Otherwise, disabling these can also make a difference.

@C_T no background services like VPN, Ad-blockers, Anti Virus, Auto cleanup apps, DNS routers on my devices.

And like I said, it was all working good until 10 days ago (I’ve not added any new apps) and the bug occurs on 2 different Samsung devices.

Hi @MashaPS ,

Both bugs are resolved in version 10.47.1 (1047101240).

You may close this thread.

Thanks!

Hi @Herve_Andrieu ,

It is great that you are not facing this issue with the update of the Google Maps version.

I will mark your reply as a solution to this thread since it would give other Local Guides the explanation how resolve if they are facing the same.

Thanks

Hello @MashaPS

I do not concede with the solution. That neither mentions any root cause nor any remedial action.

Can I comprehend that only waiting for some time remains the only solution in such cases?

Though the user reported vanishing of the bug in the latest version of the app, I did not face the mentioned problem in the earlier version too.
