Almost everyone who grew up in Hong Kong has a story to tell involving their younger selves and gai daan zai (“little eggs” in Cantonese), also known as bubble waffles, egg puffs, or egg cakes have been around for years and become a popular street food. This Hong kong street food favorite us taking over the U.S., but this time - it is stuffed with ice cream.
As a Miamian who frequented a number of haunts in Chinatown, these Hong Kong egg waffles are no stranger to me. What is new, however, is the latest food trend of folding the waffles into a cone and depositing ice cream smack in the middle. This new trend is spreading like wildfire across social media, and for good reason, too.
I am happy that these egg waffles made it in South Florida, I stumbled this cute place in Hollywood Beach and got to try their Hong Kong egg waffles with ice cream.
