The Cemitério Britânico, quietly nestled near the Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula, is a poignant historical marker. Established around 1802, it served as the final resting place for British troops stationed in Goa during the Napoleonic Wars when the territory was occupied to prevent French takeover.
Marked by an unassuming archway, the site holds approximately 56 stone tombs, some restored and some weathered, amidst the tropical overgrowth. The atmosphere is one of serene, melancholic beauty, preserving a unique and often-forgotten chapter of early 19th-century Goan history.
While no internationally famous figure is buried here, the graves include various British commanders and engineers. Its significance lies in commemorating the lives of the military personnel who died far from home, making it a state-protected and valuable piece of colonial heritage.
