I went to NCBS Bangalore for a Harvard University’s Young Scientists Program back in December 2016 and stayed there for 5 months doing research work, making amazing friends and experiencing a unique culture of South India.
The breakfasts at NCBS are one of the most wonderful things for young researchers. Generally, the food in hostels or educational institutes are thought to be tasteless, low quality and boring. Not in the case of NCBS. Every day you will see a variety of items in the menu and seeing your plate, you would eat more than you thought you would.
One of the most innovative things I saw was that every day, the staff will right down the kilograms of food wastage on the notice board, so that people only take that much amount of food which is necessary. The food prices are highly subsidized hence you are never to be left starving. On Sunday nights, they don’t serve usual dinners but you can go to the canteen on the first floor.
