Lala Khal is a simple canal coming from India and situated in the Sylhet district, Bangladesh. The reason for it is so famous due its changing color of water. Sometimes you will see clean colorless water sometimes there will be beautiful green water and sometimes it changes to amazing blue water. A probable reason for this color shifting is the mineral composition in the water. That is why you will hardly find fishes in this canal. Banks of this river build with rock-solid mud and stones. These are the suppliers of those minerals. For this amazing color shifting, it became a very popular tourist spot of this country.
Lala Khal has situated about 44 km from the Sylhet city center and 52 km from the Sylhet Osmani international airport. It takes 1 and a half hour to go there with a car or 2 hours with a public bus. A public bus can cost around 60-70 taka (70-80 cents) for the one way trip. A private microbus rent can cost around 2000-3500 BDT for a one-way trip. It is very close to the Indian border (Dawki). Roads are fairly well most of the time the bus has some hiccups in the end. As it is a very remote place of Bangladesh and close to hills roads are tough to build there. But security is not an issue here for being so close to the BGB camp.
After reaching there you can hire a nice looking boat for an hourly basis. They usually cost around 700-2000 BDT for a 2-hour trip depending on the boat quality and capacity. Most of the boats are engine driven but you can find some rowing boats. There is an option for Kayaking too. But you have to hire it from the Nazimgarh resort boat club. During the rainy season, the canal swollen with water and color shifts again towards the muddy side and losses its beauty. But then you can travel with speed boats. Best time for the visit is during the winter when the water settles in and you hardly can see any current there.
Sylhet is famous for its tea garden and beauty with small hills. You can see a lot of tea garden while traveling there and can buy excellent quality tea from the tea factories there if they allow you and if you visit at the tea plucking time. There are few excellent resorts in Sylhet which you have to find in their own website not listed in the booking.com or Agoda. They are all 3-start to 5-star quality. I will review them in the upcoming posts.
