I recently encountered an issue while using Google Maps on my desktop, and I’m hoping someone in this community might have a solution. When I try to open a photo I uploaded to Google Maps, it displays a blank image instead of the actual one. I’ve attached a screenshot below for reference.
I’ve tried refreshing the page and clearing my browser cache, but the issue persists. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know how to fix it? Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your assistance, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to our Local Guides community.
Yes I experienced this earlier and wrote about it in my Lock ups in Google Maps post. At the time I thought because no one else had reported the issue that it was some local issue but now that you have also experienced it I just wonder if there is something else happening here to cause it.
Have a read of my post and the comments that others made there about this problem and see if it helps you but I myself didn’t come to any conclusion and simply moved on. I see that you have tagged @SoniaK and @ErmesT and perhaps they may have some ideas. In the meantime If others have this same problem we might need to escalate the issue to the Team for further investigation.
Thanks for tagging me and for sharing your issue. An issue that I know very well.
When there is a blank screen Like the one that you are showing it means that the photo has been made private (visible only to you). I escalated the issue last year, because also my top viewed photo was made (an still be) private.
It sounds weird to have a “private” photo with millions of views, but unfortunately this is what may happen.
In fact, when Google Maps change the evaluation algorithm they may “scan” again all our contributions, and make private also contributions that were previously public for years. Sorry about that.
However, as the photos uploaded in Maps are much more than the reviews, checking and releasing the photos may take a lot of time. I have several “private photos” and even after months no one of them has been checked and released.
In addition, if a photo is attached to a review making private a review can also cause the photo to be switched to “private”.
I just checked your profile, and you have 50 private reviews (390 visible on a total amount of 440 submitted). For the review please follow the same principle, by filling the Form . The check of the reviews is a bit faster. Last time they released mine in a couple of months, and I still waiting after the last request, that I sent 3 weeks ago.
Please also be aware that to see what is really missing in your profile you should compare your private profile with another tab opened in “incognito” mode.
