This 11th century AD, monolithic Sculpture discovered from Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh depicts the birth of Lord Krishna.

In the 11th century, Shahdol was under the rule of the Kalchuri dynasty, who were patrons of literature, various arts and Hinduism. Sculpture and Hindu symbols developed rapidly during their and the Parmara rulers’ rule. No details have been given about the place in Shahdol from where this sculpture was found. In this Sculpture, Krishna’s mother Devaki is breastfeeding the newborn baby, in which there is a unique depiction of Adisesha Naga sheltering baby Krishna and mother Devaki with his many hoods. She is surrounded by divine maids, musicians and guards.

The sculpture also includes symbolic motifs like conch, kalash, pot and lotus under the bed. The style in which mother Devaki, newborn Krishna and all the maids and attendants have been carved with ornaments and dresses in this Sculpture through intricate carvings seems to be very much influenced by the art prevalent during the reign of the Parmara dynasty and the Kachchapaghata rulers.

This sculpture is a remarkable stone sculpture displayed in Sculpture Gallery and it’s a magnificent stone carving work of art preserved in the State Museum.
