Beyond the Invitation to ConnectLive Singapore: My Journey as a Local Guide from Cambodia

First In 2010, I knew Google Maps. In 2011, I contributed to Google Mapmaker. When I joined the Local Guides program in 2016, I knew nothing about events, invitations, badges, or merchandise. I didn’t even know about Connect at that time. I was simply using Google Maps like everyone else, but over time I started adding photos, fixing locations, and writing reviews. I didn’t think of it as something big. I just wanted to make information more accurate and helpful for people who might come after me.

For many years, I stayed quiet. I contributed to Google Maps, but I didn’t speak in the community. I didn’t post stories. I didn’t share experiences. I just did my part silently. Looking back now, those silent years were important. They built consistency. They built discipline. They built the habit of contributing without expecting anything in return.

In October 2023, I finally wrote my first post on Local Guides Connect. It was simple. It was about Angkor Wat. I did not write it perfectly. I am still not perfect at writing. But that post opened something for me. I realized that Local Guides is not only about adding places to the map. It is about connection. It is about community. It is about sharing stories from our own country with the world.

After that, I became more active. Not only online, but offline. I started hosting meetups in Cambodia. We walked around the Royal Palace area to map and take better photos. We organized photowalks using smartphones. We did “Run & Map” at Preah Vihear Temple. We held Mega Edit sessions to fix data problems and improve map accuracy. We also discussed serious issues related to map misuse and digital integrity in Cambodia, as protecting the map is part of our responsibility.

Cambodian Local Guides are often shy. Many of them don’t speak loudly in global discussions. But when they show up at meetups, edit their first location, ask questions, and try something new, I feel proud. Building this local energy means more to me than any badge level.

Recently, I received an invitation to Connect Live in Singapore. When I saw the email, I felt grateful. Not excited in a loud way, but grateful in a quiet way. It made me remember the journey from 2016 until now. The silent edits. The first post. The first meetup. The effort to keep going even when no one noticed.

This is my first year being truly active on Connect, but I have been active on Google Maps for many years already. So for me, the invitation does not feel like a reward for one moment. It feels like recognition of long-term contribution.

At the same time, I want to say something honestly. Being invited is meaningful, but it is not everything. If one year I am selected, I am thankful. If I am not selected again next year, I will continue the same work because my real satisfaction does not come from merchandise or events. It comes from knowing that someone found the correct address because I fixed it. A small business gained visibility because we added it properly. A traveller navigated more easily because the information was accurate.

Through this journey, I learned some important lessons. I learned that consistency matters more than speed. I learned that quiet work still has an impact, even if it isn’t immediately apparent. I learned that community is built slowly, with patience and trust. I learned that recognition may come, or it may not, but service should not depend on recognition. Most importantly, I learned that when your intention is clear to help others, you will never feel empty, even if there is no reward.

Every review I write, every photo I upload, every meetup I organize is my small contribution to something bigger than myself. Local Guides, for me, is not about standing on a stage. It is about serving quietly, consistently, and honestly.

Whether on the streets of Phnom Penh or at an international event, I remain the same person who joined in 2016 with a simple intention: to make life easier for others through better maps.

You told that you don’t write perfectly, but I disagree. Your post stood out to me!!!

I saw myself in your timeline, being quiet doing reviews and just later finding connect. Today I use connect to share what I learned to the new local guides, and I love it.

What an incredible milestone! I love how you framed it as recognition for the long haul, you definitely earned this. I’ve also been on Maps for years (since 2015!) and just started getting active on Connect recently. While I’m still waiting for my ‘big moment,’ stories like yours keep me motivated. Learning from this community and seeing the impact we all make together is honestly the best part of being here :hugs:
