Betul Lighthouse: Sentinel of the Coast

The Betul Lighthouse is a striking landmark, standing tall on a hill above the fishing village of Quitol. This active navigational aid is an octagonal tower made of Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC), painted distinctively with red and white spiral bands, providing a modern maritime contrast to the ancient Betul Fort nearby.

Visitors are permitted to enter and ascend the structure, but only during limited hours. Typically, the lighthouse is open in the late afternoon for one hour, often from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, seven days a week. It is wise to confirm timings as they may change.

There is a nominal entry fee to climb the lighthouse, usually around ₹20 per person. This modest charge grants access to the watch gallery at the top, offering one of the most rewarding experiences in South Goa.

From the top, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views. You can witness the spectacular Sal River estuary where the river meets the Arabian Sea, the serene expanse of Betul Beach, and the long, palm fringed coastline stretching towards Mobor in the north.

The best time to visit is just before the closing hour to capture the sunset, which melts into the Arabian Sea. It’s a perfect spot for photography, combining the engineering of the lighthouse with the natural splendor of the surrounding Goan landscape.
